To be honest I really wish I could say that I have eaten here. I was unable to order and struggled to find an updated menu. I was able to get in contact with a sweet lady there and get an updated menu but was not able to get in contact with her again after several calls to order. The many years I have been cooking I haven’t ran into one place that does not have issues in updated social media, websites, internet and phones plus a downed POS every once in awhile. I have been through the evening rush, Fridays that are a big day for customers who recently got paid, catering, events, parties and so I am one who knows more than most when things get sour... they get sour. This place seems to be suffering from one or all of the above or I’m just one for bad timing ( as usual ). I don’t know if it’s because the food is so amazing and that they are so slammed that they just can’t keep up with demand or it’s just lack of strong leadership and organization from crew members or managers. My review is solely based on trying to order and my experience and background in this industry let me make this clear so you don’t read this like the food is bad, THE FOOD HAS A WONDERFUL REPUTATION FROM ALL WHO HAVE EATEN THERE. Just seems unattainable And it’s a bit depressing to be honest because word around town says they are top notch Who knows...Maybe next week I get to have that experience. As a last note it would be awesome to know when they are done taking orders or any reservations on social media. It just keeps people in the know so they don’t end up depressed like I have 2 times in...
Read moreIt takes a lot for me to leave a bad review but after reading the great ratings this place got I have been left with no choice. I'm sorry but this was the worst place I've ever eaten, In fact I'm starting to think that all the people that wrote reviews have either grown up on tofu or are belligerently drunk. When I walked in it smelt of gas and old caesar salad dressing, the most sour odor. I tried to look past it as the wait staff was friendly and I don't judge a book by it's cover (or odor) but when our food arrived, my kids got a look at it, and began to cry I then realized I was in dinner hell. My son ordered fettuccine Alfredo and I kid you not, It arrived in a bowl with a 1/4 inch layer of melted butter pooled on top, the cream was separated and a curdled mess. My Mom had ordered some form of a baked potato that arrived swimming in a bowl of juice. She had been raving about this place for years so when I saw her instantly claim "She wasn't really hungry" I knew she was covering up the horror she had been faced with. I will say that they did have good french fries but I'm fairly sure they came from a bag because they closely resembled Red Robin steak fries. But, Hey maybe they made them, I don't know. After we left My Mom said that the experience we had was a complete let down and not of the norm and that something was off, but If you mess up a baked potato then I can't trust you. My point to this, There is literally no where to eat in John Day so if you're on a road trip, Eat in a different city. Sorry Snaffle bit, I hope you can do better....
Read moreBest steak I've had in years! I'd almost given up on ordering steak at a restaurant because more often than not, I felt I would've been better off cooking for myself at home. The Snaffle Bit has redeemed my faith! My wife & I dropped in for dinner on a Friday night with no reservation and we got right in. We were celebrating our 10 year wedding anniversary on an impromptu trip from Bend through the Painted Hills to Prairie City. Our host and server were very friendly and fun to talk to. My wife ordered a Pendleton, neat, and they were very generous with the pour (about a triple, I'd say). We ordered and split an Oscar tenderloin with shrimp, button mushrooms, asparagus, blue cheese, cheddar garlic mash potatoes, and garlic bread. Every bite from every selection on the plate was decadent and heavenly. The steak was cooked perfectly (mid rare, as requested), and the blue cheese was velvety and smooth. The garlic mashed potatoes were heavy on the garlic, just the way I like it, and they weren't sticky or overly fluffy. We were really impressed with the food and give our compliments to the chef. Being from Bend we have plenty of good restaurants to choose from and could be considered "foodies." The food at the Snaffle Bit IS GOOD. REALLY GOOD. The service was very good and we loved the rustic, farmhouse atmosphere. We will be back! Thank you for making our anniversary that much...
