Sheldon's Flowers — Local services in Rochester Township

Am so pleased and grateful for the compassion, courtesy, and professionalism shown towards me from Gene Sheldon at Sheldon's Flowers, Rochester, PA. I had just gotten out of the hospital due to stroke & felt awful that I didn't even have a card to send my dearly beloved 82yo mother whose birthday falls on December 23rd. I decided the only way to try to send her my loving birthday/christmas wishes was to try to send flowers, which I've never done before. Especially since this was her first Christmas spent without my dearly departed father.

However, it was already 5pm local time & I was striking out everywhere that Saturday the 22nd. Every shop I called was closed already & Giant Eagle no longer has pre-made arrangements, does not allow anyone to buy over the phone, & doesn't deliver. I remembered that I used to deliver to Sheldon's as a UPS driver while going to college. I always kept the flowers up front in the winter to keep them from wilting from cold & always got a warm welcome whenever I delivered there.

I called at 5:30 pm not expecting t get an answer. Was pleasantly relieved to hear someone answer with a friendly voice even after hours. The owners live upstairs so sometimes you can reach them when everyone else is closed. I told George my wish to send a flower arrangement and expected him to say they were closed and would not be able to deliver anything tomorrow on a Sunday for my dear mother's birthday. When I mentioned that at that age each day is special and precious to me it seemed to warm his heart. He said he would do all he could to make an arrangement with fresh flowers he was now just unpacking and deliver it himself on Sunday the next day. He was also very willing to work within my budget which meant so much to me because the arrangement that arrived surely would have cost far more than what funds I had available due to being disabled.

The following day I got a tearful call from my mother thanking me for the most beautiful centerpiece arrangement she had ever seen. They were tears of joy. My note said: Happy Birthday & Merry Christmas mother dear. Love always and forever, Dean. Later that day I called to see if she heard from friends/family and had a nice birthday. She said that the whole house smellled of evergreen and flowers and she couldn't wait to light the bright red candles when they have Christmas dinner. I told her how much I've missed her, how special she is and each day she is still here, and after saying goodbye I sat in the warm glow of love knowing that I was able to send all my love to her through the beauty of flowers. My relationship with Sheldon's Flowers started in 1997. At that time I was working for a wholesale flower delivery company and delivered to Mr. Biondi on regular basis. It was Valentines Day 1998, a very busy day of deliveries, when I made my third or fourth trip to Sheldon's Flowers that day. It was late in the day and I unloaded the order and while Mr. Biondi made out a check we talked and he asked what flowers I had got my girl that year. I told him none as there wasn’t quite enough money to get her any. Mr. Biondi gave me a smile and handed me a check and asked me to wait just a minute as he wanted to give me a delivery for the manager at the wholesaler I worked for. I waited about five or so minutes and Mr. Biondi came around the corner and handed me a very large beautiful with a mixed bouquet of confetti roses, carnations, Gerber daisies and a few others mixed with babies breath and fern. He handed me the bouquet and said give these to the girl you speak of and love so much.

Ever since that day when I need flowers I call Sheldon's Flowers. Mr. Biondi has now passed the torch to his son Geno who runs this family operated shop with the same care and attention to detail that his father did for so many years.

A couple of days ago, I ordered a high quality sympathy floral stand arrangement online through Sheldon's website for delivery to Boylan's Funeral Home. The experience was very straightforward one. A couple of hours later I received a call from the owner (Geno) of Sheldon's. Now, I have never dealt with Sheldon's Flower shop and I have never met Geno. He explained that the arrangement I had ordered was not available due to a product supplier problem. Geno then suggested an alternative floral stand arrangement, which would be fuller, larger and more colorful for the same price. He also offered to personally deliver the arrangement to Boylan's, on time. I trusted what he had to say and I accepted. Today he sent me the attached photo of the arrangement that I ordered. I could not be more pleased. Really beautiful and much larger than the the (large) floral stand arrangement I had originally ordered. I have never dealt with these folks before, and I live two thousand miles away, but this man and his shop, in my opinion, went above and beyond the call of duty. I would definitely place my trust in this shop again. I would exceedingly recommend Sheldon's to anyone who is in search of a high quality product that will be handled in a personal and professional manner. BTW, the owner called me after the floral arrangement was completed to show me a photo of the shop's work, and to let me know he was about to deliver the arrangement to Boylan's - on time. Again I was super impressed and happy with the result. It left me feeling like we must support our small businesses in our local communities whenever possible. They get the job done, often with sacrifices involved that none of us see. They are often owned and staffed by people from our own local communities. Thank you for all the hard work Geno.
