I meant to make the review a long time ago. I went to the Caledonia Mine back in October 2024 and ended up taking the wrong route to the Caledonia Mine, if you go there make sure you go onto Caledonia Rd from Greenland, MI. Don’t try coming from the west otherwise it’s an extremely rocky rough road that ended up breaking my CVS axel & lower control arm on my Subaru and was stuck just minutes away from the Caledonia Mine. Thankfully I was able to get ahold of the owners Bethany & Preston at the Caledonia Mine who went ABOVE and BEYOND to get us some help, as well as sending Miles to bring me to the Mine while my dad worked on getting my car towed. I ended up having a blast at the mine, got to find lots of native copper and a small datolite in my pile! The surrounding area was beautiful and so peaceful. It was such a great experience that I’ll be coming back here again. Truly the best public mine in the entire state of Michigan. To look at pricing and to book a spot go on their website and you’ll find everything there! If I can recall it’s $100 for the native copper pile & $300 for the copper/datolite pile. Little pricey, but I promise you’ll find some cool rocks.
P.s they have a porta pottie & they were chill with us having our...
Read moreI had a lot of fun today doing the datolite dig. I had some concern that they salt the piles however that is NOT the case. The younger man (works at adventure as a tour guide, I forgot his name) was a huge help and was worth his weight in gold. If you are not sure what to look for they will help you. The cost is high but you have to remember, they are going in the mine, getting the material out for you, setting up the stations etc. I think it is safe to say you could get 50% of your cost back from what you find. The other half pays for the experience. I also got to meet Darius and his friend Aidan who were huge helps. Those kids have a clear eye and are willing to give advice. This experience is something that is overlooked in the keweenaw. I think everybody should do it at least once. Don't worry about the amount of dirt, there was plenty. I'd recommend waterproof clothing for the datolite one. Bring a shovel too. Like I said I had a great time and hope to see myself back...
Read moreParticipated in a datolite dig with members of the Copper Country Rock & Mineral Club on Sat Oct 8, 2021. Initially I thought it was a little pricey - but well worth the cost. The piles were direct;y from the mine - all ready to go - with search screens and water for washing the tailings. The staff/guide was very friendly - definitely a people person - and very knowledgeable and helpful. I found at least 20 datolites. Although most are pea size - I found 4 good ones of decent size and a few nice pieces of copper - as did my partner on the pile. A few in our group found copper with a fleck of silver on it. It was a great experience and a lot of fun - you never know what you will find - which adds to the enjoyment. I came prepared with rubber boots, rain suit, gloves, and shovel. Be forewarned - searching through the whole pile is almost impossible - and prepare to feel soar the next day - at least for a...
