This review is specifically covering the gun counter / sales experience. The short answer is that the experience was embarrassing (for Cabela’s). Beyond the fact that it was apparent from the start the sales associate knew little-to-nothing about the various firearms available beyond the caliber and brand I could overhear numerous incorrect statements and overall misinformation provided to a younger couple attempting to make what appeared to be their first firearm purchase from another sales associate. It was clear that a sale of any sort is the goal of Cabela’s…not the right sale, long term satisfaction, and/or education. Speaking to my experience one of the firearms I asked to see was a particular brand rifle I have done my research on and was ready to purchase. The rifle in the caliber I wanted was “in the back” according to the sales associate so rather than go get it I was presented with a different brand rifle (less quality) in the same caliber than the one I asked for. I proceeded to inform the sales associate I did not want this brand/rifle for many reasons and they, for lack of a better term, argued with me and gave me a look of bewilderment. I’m not sure if this individual is used to dealing with customers uneducated on the topic and willing to take whatever they give them but in the end this overall experience did not sit well with me and even though I knew the rifle I wanted was in-stock (yet “in the back”) I decided to end the sale right then/there and take my business elsewhere.
I do not recommend anyone shopping for a firearm here unless you already know what you want…and can get the sales person to...
Read moreI purchased a firearm online and when I went into the store to pick it up, I was told that I would need a new permit card because there was no space between the address number and street name. I have purchased guns in the past with no issue. Besides the lack of a space, the address was the same as what appears on my drivers license. After telling me this, the staff barely made eye contact with me and offered no other explanation besides its store policy that the permit matches the ID address, but it does match as it’s the same address. I ended up returning the gun as they would not run a background check, nor did they give me any options. I had to ask for the item to be returned as they just stood there staring at me after saying they could not help me because a SPACE was not between the address street number and street name, but the address was correct!!! I’ll go back to Sportsman and purchase it there as I’ve had no issues. Terrible experience. Would not recommend purchasing a firearm at this store.
UPDATE: I did go and get a permit new card at the sheriffs office because I didn’t want to chance this happening again. I was told that Cabellas frequently turns customers away for permit to carry card minor address differences, such as a drivers license saying the word, “lane,” and the permit card has, “ LN,” or “Street,” and “ST.” When I went to Sportsman and bought my gun there I told them what happened, and they said those are acceptable abbreviations and the lack of a space on my old card would not have been an issue, which I knew as I had already purchased firearms there...
Read moreIt’s a hit or miss. I can honestly say I walk in expecting to be overlooked and ignored. I had several instances where I didn’t receive service in several departments.
Most recently I was pricing out some boat options and spent about 5 minutes looking around waiting on someone. I watched the older salesperson look me in the face and walk past me to greet and ask teenagers if they needed any help or had questions about the boats?
That same outing however I received exceptional service purchasing a new bait caster set up.
I came back today to buy another bait caster. I knew the exact model I wanted. After speaking with customer service for my exchange I went back to the fishing area. The store had just opened so there wasn’t many customers. There were 2 people working. One person was actively engaged with another patron the other wasn’t doing anything. He didn’t acknowledge me, didn’t ask if I had any questions, just acted as if I wasn’t there and continued to fiddle around with the register.
There have been several situations like this ins several departments and it doesn’t feel good. The few positive experiences do not come close to the negative experiences I’ve had over the years at Cabelas. It makes sense why I try to avoid buying anything from Cabelas. I would go on the record and say if you are a Black American or any person of color to avoid shopping at Cableas as they aren’t concerns about our business or providing service to...
