My family loves going to Round Top; every year we pay the $10-$22.50 to go into the Big Red Barn. This year, however, the venders were just so incredibly rude. I was among the younger of the patrons, at 41, and the vendors were so nasty to me and my family. Particularly noteworthy was a woman at a high end jewelry counter (who had quite a few estate diamonds and was located in the domestic tent in the middle of the barn); this woman could not have been more dismissive and degrading. She assumed I had no money, I did, so I went and spent it elsewhere when she couldn’t be bothered to answer my questions. This situation happened to us more than once.
We overheard many of the vendors complaining they had a slow Spring 2019, I can only assume it’s because of how rude they were to the customers. Why paid $10-$20ish to buy high-end antiques, when you can literally travel one minute up the road and buy them for free elsewhere. We had a MUCH better buying experience in Warrenton. We won’t be back.
The Big Red Barn features more high-end antiques, collectibles, and (some) antiquities—so TBRB is more expensive. This is to be expected. I happened to be shopping with a scholar and museum curator who confirmed there were many replicas and fakes among some really beautiful authentic pieces. Make sure you get signed guarantees when buying at TBRB. Again, their snobbery was...
Read moreWe went today thinking the tickets were $10. Got there at noon. When we went in we were told the tickets were $20, so I thought I had misread. Turns out that starting at 1pm they are $10. Why didn't the lady tell me this when I bought the ticket at noon and questioned the price. That would have been the nice thing to do.
Turns out the ticket was a waste of money. Everything was so overpriced. Don't go unless you plan on spending hundreds or thousands on antiques.
We went down the the road and found a great area with really fun things, affordable and creative pieces and the Methodist Men selling very good bbq. It was free to get in. Next time I will start at this area. It was much more crowded than the big red barn, but not bad.
One of the friendly vendors there told us that there are about 8 more miles of places to look. Next time!! I won't ever pay to...
Read moreWhat a scam. Don’t equate the Round Top Antique Fair with the Big Red Barn. This place is for those who have more money than sense. I don’t know if they own the rights to the event, but it should be addressed that you only need to pay an entrance fee if you desire to drop $5k on an overpriced relic that may or may not actually be an antique. Do yourself a favor and drive down the road a bit. Stop in the various lots along the way to see a lot of the same stuff at a reasonable price. For those who like to do some hunting, I’d recommend Warrenton markets instead. Granted it is definitely for two different types of clientele, but we definitely found better items at reasonable prices down the road. Don’t fall for the Big Red Barn or Blue Hills propaganda. That is not the true...
