Río Sabana — Local services in Sabana

This pin location is not the trailhead. Keep driving past the Casa Cubuy Ecolodge. You will either make it all the way to the "Rio Sabana trailhead ("Rio Sabana Recreation Area"), or in the summer (like when we hiked, March 24) you will first hit a roadblock at the entrance to the national forest, where you can park on the side of the road.

Here are the main milestones, per my Garmin. -0.83 miles: park at the roadblock 0 miles: Rio Sabano recreation area, "official" trailhead. 1.24 miles: "infinity pool" swimming area 1.36 miles: main river crossing 3.11 miles: "end" - junction with Trade Winds Trail

So the full out and back for me ended up being almost 8 miles (12.8km). Be prepared!

Most people that park here are just walking to the infinity pool. The "end" of this hike isn't a particularly nice destination, just a junction with another trail: there is no view to speak of. You would need to go ANOTHER couple miles out on the Trade Winds Trail to get to El Toro or El Yunque peak.

This was a great, challenging hike, but only 3 stars because of the lack of view at the top, and the closed road to the trail head. We hiked March 24th, and the road is closed ("in summer") before you can get to the "Rio Sabano" recreation area, which is the main trailhead. So you have to park at the roadblock on S191, (entrance to El Yunque National Forest) and walk an extra 0.80 miles up the closed road to "start" the hike.

We got a little confused at the river crossing, shortly after the infinity pool swimming area. There was no bridge, and we had to ford across the river (only about 4 inches deep). You'll only know you are supposed to cross here by a faint pink ribbon tied around a tree on both sides, and the ruin of an old concrete bridge. River crossing is at 18.274813, -65.799597.

Narrow, muddy, and sometimes slippery trail, although you rarely have to use your hands. You absolutely want to wear long pants, and should probably wear long sleeves too (sharp grasses hanging...
