Extra Space Storage — Local services in Saco

I’ve been with Extra space storage facilities off and on for years even when it was Life storage. The Portland and south Portland locations were wonderful and I never had any issues. I am giving 1 star for that reason.

This place in Saco….issues from the moment I moved into the unit: 1)-rusted door slide was next to impossible to open the unit door. I reported the Issue to a man who worked in the office and the problem was addressed with “WD40” which washed away after about a month making it rusted shut again. 2)-in December/January, I stopped there a few times to get my Christmas decor and spent over 30 minutes de-icing my unit door so it would open. Snow and ice had built up along the bottom- clearly the grounds weren’t plowed/shoveled or maintained like a Maine winter requires.

3)- I was informed of a price increase for the storage unit with limited notice.

4)- Saco location was rigid and unsympathetic with financial hardship I had experienced one month, was unwilling to waive fees or work with me on payment arrangements. I’m a professional healthcare provider in Portland community but was made to feel as though I was a broke slum-bucket who can’t pay my bills at extra space.

5)- Back in February, I received a call and email from the Saco branch staff while away in FL on a personal trip- I hadn’t been into my unit since early January but this call was to “inform me I put my lock back on the door without it latched and they needed to cut my lock” to fix the issue. I was confused by it but went along with it since I wasn’t in Maine to go in person. They charged me for a new lock after cutting mine off.

6)- early may, I went to my storage unit to check in and place some winter related items in storage- to find my storage unit smelled strongly of rat urine mixed with moth balls. I noted rodent urine/feces all over my belongings, holes chewed thru items and moth balls had been placed inside my unit on the floor (see picture below) without my permission. My cut lock was In pieces on the ground still, from when I “left the door unlatched with the lock on” while away FL. See photos. And, no, I wasn’t storing food items or anything that would attract rats.

7)- in early June, I gave notice I was moving out prior to July billing cycle. I had no intentions of keeping my belongings there longer, especially thru the hot summer months. I did an inventory of ruined items and filed a claim with the storage unit insurance company they use, none of my items are covered ($500 deductible and my loss is less then that). I salvaged what I could of my items, cleaned rat feces for days, packed it all in a truck and moved to an alternate storage company. My mattress in plastic was ruined and I feared there was a family of rats living inside of it, so I left the ruined mattress, rat feces and moth balls in the storage unit when I moved out. 8)- I apparently owe extra space Saco over $400 in “cleaning fees” and am speaking with an attorney.

Absolutely disgusted with these ppl … I have had my storage unit for 10 years recently I had my grandfather die found out my father is also dying and my son try hurting himself and he had to go get help 3 hours away my daughter taken by her father against a court order my hours cut at work so I fell behind on my rent 2 months , I already pay an outrageous price ( because new customers get better pricing while longterm customers rent continually increases ) they charged me outrageous late fee’s I explained my situation and they were not even willing to remove the late fee’s to help me out they added my locker to auction completely no humanity here my mother has a locker here and my father had one they were so rude to me on a call about my fathers locker they gave both of us a small credit and my father ended up moving his stuff out and asked they transfer the credit for his account to me because the rudeness was to me on the phone they said they would never did once he left … honestly run never use this place for storage they will just ride ur rent over and over and u will not be a valued customer even if you have paid them over $30,000.00 in rent experiencing some tragic events happening and they have never had an issue with u … not even asking them to take any of ur rent off just the late fees because u we’re going through a tough time THEY DONT CARE … what happened to empathy in this sick world … it’s money over everything sickening!!! NEVER RENT A...

Excellent customer service. Fast easy and painless. Super clean!!! Very happy! Updated. After removing my items. I can say I would never go back. Sue is friendly at first. They said I owed 200 after moving out. I asked them to send me a bill so I could see this cleaning charge sue threatened me with. Guess what. Never received one when I called them out on the charge she didn't like it. She is rude and snaps at people. I do not recommend this place to anyone. I had excellent friendly service through U-Haul in saco. Try them out before this place. Update. After using this place for over a year when I moved out of the storage the woman manager changed her nice attitude. She became mean and moody. She was rude and almost threatening. She was not good with confrontation. They were horrible people to rent from. Their price kept going up. Never again. Only reason I did this review was Sue was begging people to do them. Said there was a contest to see who would get more. Unfortunately her attitude deserves updated reviews to tell you how horrible she was. Sue.... You need a good review of customer service standards. The way you speak to some customers is horrible. Never would I recommend this place completely...
