I called on Wednesday morning for a tee time for Saturday morning (today, June 6th). A woman named Kelly answered the phone and asked me what I had in mind for a time. I asked for a time around 9 AM for a foursome. On the other end, I hear her say, “Why is this blocked out?” (meaning the tee sheet—also meaning that she cannot add people in that time slot). She explains (as much to herself as to me) that the club doesn’t want people rushing a group that is supposed to go out at 9:30. She gives me an 8:41 tee time, but assures me that she will be working on Saturday, and that she can get our group out at 9:01.
Fast forward to today, and when I check in on arrival at 8:15, she asks to “split the difference” with me, giving me an 8:51 tee time. (Also, in the middle of our conversation about my tee time, the phone rang, and she finished the entire phone call instead of asking the person on the line if they could wait).
Fine. I wanted more time to warm up, but okay. Then, the starter, John, comes to our group on the driving range and tells us that he will need to get us out on the golf course soon as they are planning on having an outing go off on 1, 17, and 18. I have hit 3 balls after putting. I feel rushed. I feel frustrated. I hit a few more balls and head off to the first tee, teeing off a few minutes after 8:40.
It is the little things like this that turn a 4-5 star experience into a 3-4 star experience. I honestly believe the staff is fully competent, but if you believe yourself to have a 4-5 star golf course [(judging by the $45 it cost me to ride (I asked if I could walk, but Kelly did not want me to as a pace of play concern)], the check in experience HAS to be better.
I had a good golfing day. I had never seen the course and shot 72 from the tips, which is a little over 6800 (played the ball down and holed every putt, as the golf gods intended). I hit driver OB on 9; driver was not the club to hit, and I was OB by about 2 feet (OB is just off the cart path right with water left). Made triple. Still, I had two 2s today, three other birdies, and hit a flagstick. Enjoyable layout. 16/18 greens are perfect—just a little slow. The second par 5 on the front does not have a great landing area off the tee. Both par 3s on the front have some problem with the greens. The fairways were phenomenal. This is a real golf course, and playing this golf course regularly will improve your game (and show you areas where your game needs work). The golf course is 4 stars, but I have to take off a star for the check in experience today. I...
Read moreWe played this course for the first time in early December 2021. The course was in mostly fair condition for the time period. There were a couple of greens in the opening few holes that had really suffered this summer and were in a state of repair...very little grass, bumpy, etc. I feel like they will be in good condition in the late spring/early summer though.
We enjoyed the layout and the undulating greens. Most courses in this area have greens that lack character but not these. The staff people were some of the nicest we've encountered in the Charlotte metro area. The chili dogs were also some of the better ones I've eaten at a golf course.
I'm giving my rating of three stars based on playing conditions at the time. We do plan to come back next season and I will update my rating to reflect conditions at that time. I think it could easily be a 4/5 star rating.
All of that said, I think the golf course may have to really beat etiquette into their customers. Honestly, to the point of not letting a golfer on the course until they have listened to someone explaining divots, how to repair them, raking bunkers, etc. We spent a lot of time fixing ball marks on the greens. Because the greens were soft, there were a lot of them and some were pretty deep. Additionally, bunkers were not raked after golfers had entered them. See the attached picture and notice my ball sitting in the deepest rut. No idea who was wrestling who in this bunker, but it was bad. It was very frustrating and not the fault of the course. But maybe the course staff can really communicate to their customers what a golfer's responsibilities are so that everyone can...
Read morePlayed 9/4/2023, fun layout, new greens (Mach 1) rolled nice and true, they will only improve over time if properly maintained. They have extensively cut down a large number of trees that needed to be removed but they are still on the course but not really in play unless it's a real wayward shot. It was $65.00 to play on the holiday, which isn't that bad considering the area and conditions. A few suggestions would be to have a ranger/marshal to keep pace of play moving throughout the course and to not allow "entitled" golfers to hit 2 tee shots off every tee, because both shots wound up in the same place (OB). Secondly, do not allow a very LARGE, well-rounded golfer (about 450 pounds) to stand at the end of the bar at the turn and "stuff/cram" hot dogs down his throat and continue to wait on his "back 9" order when the other groups behind him and his group that have called ahead so play isn't slowed for the rest of us because you're trying to inhale all the hot dogs they have on hand. The course really wasn't that busy to take 2 1/2 hours to play the front 9. My group, (3some) waited on every hole on the on course, except 1 and 10 at least 10 minutes minimum sometimes 15 minutes because of slow play. I hope this course doesn't turn into a "money grab" and just let anyone/group do as they please because they need the revenue for the renovations, like some Charlotte courses do. By allowing what happened yesterday, will continue if not properly monitored and it will eventually lead to decreased play, especially @ $65.00. Overall, I would highly recommend this course and look forward to...
