It was a blistering hot day, the Texas drought was in full swing and we decided to check out these falls. What was I thinking! as we started down a cactus ridden trail, dared not to step off risking being impaled by thorns. The trail just kept going and going and going and I just go hotter and hotter and hotter, thinking constantly about turning back. Finally, the trail started to descend and I thought great! we are getting closer as we went down and down and down...I kept listening for the roar of the falls....heard nothing. Finally, practically rappelling down while clinging onto the cable we arrived at the falls.....a mere trickle. I am sure that after the drought was over and the rains commenced that these falls must be a beautiful sight, NOT during a drought. The steep climb back up, the long hike back to the car, and it had gotten hotter....finally AC. I still give it 5 stars as it really was pretty down there...
Read moreMy rating is a bit biased since this site is a part of the Colorado Bend State Park. As a whole, it is a fantastic place to spend the week with family for an outdoor adventure. Being that I arrived in late May and the current water levels, the fall did not have much water flowing to be excited about. But it was obvious when it does that it holds great beauty. It was still beautiful to see with only a couple areas flowing with water. There is no swimming, but thankfully the springs in the park is a great spot for that. It is the perfect little hike with a nice reward. As it turned out, it stormed on the way back from the site and the lightning and thunder was a bit terrifying. That kind of adrenaline gives me a kick while nature exploring though. Hope for the best but plan for anything. There are rocks that can be a bit worse than level along the way and if they are wet it can be a bit slippery- so be prepared and...
Read moreI have a small ranch across from this park and have kayaked to these falls and spicewood springs many times. Thank God because it's only 10 minutes by kayak and this is BEAUTIFUL,but, rough country. If you have small children or knee issues be prepared for a fairly difficult hike. It's manageable but you need plenty of water and good shoes. Don't forget to take a break in the river where the falls turn it clear and cool. It will soothe sore bones for sure. These are hands down the most beautiful falls in Texas and it is year round but better in spring and fall. Especially May. If you can it easier to camp upstream at one of the campgrounds and kayak there. It shallow and slightly rocky ,but, I pull my wife or dog behind me in a tube no problem. It's easy upstream and down with no strong current or deris so pretty leisurely rafting...
