The Painted Cave is the largest sea cave in California (and the 4th largest in the WORLD)!! It’s 1227 feet long (that’s more than 4 football fields!!), almost 100 feet wide, and the entrance stretches 160 feet above the water level to its ceiling!! The rainbow of colors you see on the cave walls are created by various rock types, lichens and algae.
It’s located along the cliffs of Santa Cruz Island in the Channel Islands National Park and you can only visit it via the park’s only concessionaire Island Packers Cruises.
The captains skillfully navigate into the giant cave opening and slowly drift you as far back as they can. Once we got inside, the captain turned off the engines and all we could hear were the echos of the seabirds chirping and the gentle lapping of the waves - what an experience!! Highly recommend!
Shout out to the awesome captains and crew over at island packers for this adventure! They are incredibly skilled in these challenging environments and are the only way in and out of the cave and out to the islands - I’ve always had such a great time with them...
