You guys keep sending me an automated text asking for a review, so here you go.
The range is nice. The shop where you check in and pay is clean, although the music was a little too loud. Decades of shooting guns and racing motorcycles has left me a little hard of hearing though, so don't mind me too much on that criticism. Nice selection of modern firearms and seemed to be well stocked on accessories or parts if you need them but I didn't look that closely.
The range I was not overly impressed with but it IS nice. Their rule of unloading your firearms out of their cases at the bench is perfectly reasonable, but there are no rifle racks behind the benches to set your rifles on when you're not using them, so if you show up with more than one, especially if they have a suppressor on them (hot enough to melt things) you'll be begging for more space at your bench. I had at one point all 5 rifles on my bench pointed down range.
The range is set up so that you can only shoot from the bench, or from prone. This is perfectly reasonable considering this is a public range, and it's now surrounded by neighborhoods. The problem is that every chair at every bench is short, compared to the height of the bench. When you sit down and try to shoot your rifle off its bipod, or from a machined front rest, the awnings that stretch over forcing you to keep your rifle pointed down range get in the way because your natural point of aim will be forcing you to aim up. In fact, it's a huge safety hazard because you have to strain to point your rifle down. If the chairs were just taller this wouldn't be an issue. This is why you see people in pictures, or at the range, sitting several feet back from the bench and shooting off the very edge of it so they can try to avoid shooting the awning/cover and get a better angle to the target. This makes for another big safety issue because now instead of the muzzle of the rifle being pointed past the bench, it's pointed at the edge and it's easier for an inexperienced shooter to graze the table itself, or potentially shoot the dividers between the benches.
The entry fee is reasonable, far more reasonable than their memberships. The point of buying a range membership is to save money, but unless you shoot at least 4 times a month you won't be doing that with their membership. I'm not sure what the thought process was behind $15 to shoot all day, but $50/mo to be a member. They'd sell far more memberships that people would likely never use if they had say a $40 shoot all day fee and a $30/mo membership/subscription.
Overall the fact that they have steel out to 300 is the reason I tried them. It's so rare to find a decent range between San Antonio and Austin that has that. I didn't shoot on their handgun range but what I saw it seemed very nice. I will definitely be back when I'm in a plinking mood. As a competitive shooter it's also just nice to be able to shoot steel at 300 yards when you want to test a load, or some new equipment like kestrel, scope etc... It's a nice range just needs some tweaks. These are observations the casual shooter just probably wouldn't notice. I'll just be sure to bring my own stool...
Read moreMy experience here was AMAZING. I rarely leave reviews (although I rely on them) but this place deserves a major shout out. To me, the best part of my experience was my interaction with the folks who work here, but the range itself stands apart from others. The team here is very welcoming and takes safety seriously which I appreciate. The range is huge! It's outdoor with shaded shooting lanes and areas to practice almost every weapon and shooting style you prefer (pistol, shotgun, rifle, skeet, archery, tactical shooting and even a sporting clay range/course that they change up often). The check in building also has guns and equipment for sale as well as some novelty items and food/drink. The bathrooms are also inside (temperature controlled) and very clean (which as a female I care about when it comes to outdoor locations). :)
Range masters Carmello and Ben were so friendly and knowledgeable. They took the time to welcome us to the range and explain the rules and everything they offered. Ben took extra time to hang with us for a bit talking weapons and showed us some different options when we were done. Terry at the front check in was also amazing and was so nice and friendly from the time we walked in to when we left.
I recommend this range to anyone who is shooting alone, with a party or practicing for sport or hunting. This place is now my all time favorite range. Thank you LoneStar team for such a great experience. My Dad had been waiting to shoot his new guns and you made our quality time that much better. We will...
Read moreWe came ready to spend, but the staff made us feel like a burden.
We walked into Lone Star Handgun excited to shoot, spend money, and have a good time. Instead, we got cold, dismissive service from the start.
I pointed at a gun and asked if it was the Springfield Kuna—turns out it was actually the Sig MPX. Rather than simply correcting me, the guy at the counter mocked me: “Kuna? What’s a Kuna?” Then followed it up with, “We shoot real guns around here.” Really? The MPX we ended up renting is a 9mm, just like the Kuna. That kind of attitude is completely uncalled for.
To make it worse, the MPX misfired, and when I mentioned it to the staff, they were dismissive and couldn’t have cared less. No sense of urgency, no concern for safety.
Earlier, when we asked what they recommended shooting, another staff member replied, “I don’t know what you guys are looking for.” That was a perfect moment to upsell and create a better customer experience—mention the full autos, the 100-round boxes, the fun stuff. But they didn’t bother. Zero energy, zero effort.
After our visit, I checked out the Google reviews and saw that we’re not the only ones who felt this way. Multiple people mention how the staff is unfriendly, uninviting, and makes the experience feel cold. Sadly, I agree.
We came ready to spend and walk away hyped. Instead, we left disappointed and with no plans to return. If you're looking for a range that treats its customers well,...
