Eck McCanless treated us to a demonstration of his work. He threw a pot and then pulled one that was in process to show us how he carves the exterior of his swirled vases, tumblers, and oil dispensers. It was wonderful and a first time experience for my friend who loves pottery but has never seen a potter work. McCanless Pottery is truly unique in Seagrove. He layers different colored clays so, that when they are on the wheel and he pulls a container a spiral pattern appears. Once the container has dried for a spell, he will carefully and skillfully carved the exterior to accentuate the beauty of the pattern. His selection is lovely - my friend purchased a piece from his blue series and I could not resist the unique violet. We highly recommend a visit to see this potter - you will never forget it.

We got lucky and happened upon Eck creating a piece outside discussing his technique and the entire process he goes through to create his unique style. One of the best artists we got to meet and talk to. Highly recommend dropping by his studio.

Eck McCanless has become one of my favorite pottery places to visit when I go to Seagrove. Eck mixes several colors of clay together in a very unique fashion to result in an exquisite and unique look. Sometimes he carves the piece and it results in one type of look. Other times he just lets the swirly look stay there and it's beautiful, too. What I really enjoy is watching him at the wheel. He throws a pot so quickly and is able to converse at the same time, showing his customers what he's doing. It's amazing. I am a budding potter myself and am very impressed by his high skill level. I will continue to visit this shop each time I go...

Eck gave us a demonstration, and we really appreciated his artisanship. He makes a few functional pieces but focuses on making every one he makes a work of art. He uses a unique spiraling technique to get a swirl of different colored clays. He will intricately carve the sides to bring out the patterns. The clear glaze highlights the spirals innate in the clay. Few potters use this technique, so a vase or chalice from Eck will truly be unique. Definitely recommend for people who want to add visual interest and a conversation starter to...
