What a gem of a spot! We were here at the end of 2024, not technically winter yet but still, frigid. One side of the island had icy slush along the shoreline, it was THAT cold - that was a unique experience; the slush made such a cool sound with the waves. So many trails to explore - we'll definitely be back. Also, the largest cellar hole we've ever seen! Lots of brand new pedestals for informational signs, although the signs weren't up when we were there, my guess is they'll be installed in the spring when it warms up; it'll be fun to go back & see what they all say. Met a super nice gentleman who was hunting, so be sure to wear lots of blaze orange in hunting season, like the sign encourages. There were a handful of cars at the entrance, but we almost felt like we had the island to ourselves. Walk, explore, hunt, road or trail run, road bike or mountain bike - it's definitely a great spot for all of those activities. And, we were speculating, a fun place to cross country ski when there's snow, too! Stunning sunset as a bonus to enjoy as we ended a fun few hours.
SHAME on the politicians & greedy corporations who want to RUIN Sears Island with a PORT on this historic, natural, gorgeous, absolutely unique...
Read moreGreat spot to visit! A favorite for our family. If you are from away and trying to get there via Google Maps, please be aware that as of August, 2025, Google will take you to the wrong place. To access Sears Island, follow RT 1 through Searsport and look for the Sears Island road on your right (assuming you are heading toward Stockton Springs / Bucksport). If you see a restaurant called Just Barb's, you're now in Stockton Springs and you have gone too far.
If you follow Google Maps, you'll end up somewhere on Cape Jellison...
Read morethis is such a fantastic spot!! There’s a few different trail options — a few that end with a lookout of the water and a few that walk right along the coast. There’s a few loop trails as well. This would be a great place to run — there’s a paved road that runs through the island if you’re not into trail running. The walk was really beautiful — very green, lots of ferns, saw some wildlife— and ended at a great lookout of the water. I really recommend doing a hike here - it’s such a cool place....
