Providing 1 star is giving too much credit. As a former leader with BJC I am embarrassed that Memorial East is part of the BJC Family. The experience my daughter had at Memorial East on 4/18/21 was inhumane, unprofessional, unethical, and all out unacceptable. The nurse Teresa, and the female MD on staff that evening (Dr. Marie Scarborough). along with the phlebotomist displayed a level of unprofessional conduct, inclusive of disruptive and rude that DO NOT fall in line with BJC Mission Statement that says employees are committed to providing safe, compassionate and exceptional care- in a supportive and caring environment that meets the individual needs of the patient and family. What took place on Sunday was the complete opposite. They were rude, ignorant, lacked moral empathy, values, interpersonal skills or bedside manners. I live out of state, and luckily my daughter called to allow me an opportunity to listen and witness the exchange. I was upset and appalled by the exchange and what I heard and how they initially addressed me. I spoke up and specifically stated that their behavior was way out of line and that is not how you handle any patient being seen in a facility. I also said they were untrained and not equipped to handle any crisis. The MD told a staff member to hang up on me. When I mentioned that I was a former leader of BJC they walked out of the room. My daughter needed to be seen, but should have never experienced a blatant disregard for basic patient rights. They mocked her, broke PHI and HIPAA laws discussing patient care aloud with no privacy, and the phlebotomist blatantly lying to cause negative reactions or responses. I had to address the lie on the phone. If they handled my daughter that way- then they have most certainly handled other patients that way which is unacceptable. There have been prior complaints of the same as well. Never in my 28 years of leadership have I experienced or witnessed the level of unprofessional conduct by any healthcare provider that centers around mental and emotional abuse of a patient. That night I asked for a call back- the MD never called me. I called every few hours with none one returning calls. When I mentioned my flight was scheduled to arrive- all of a sudden I received updates. I flew in the very next day to ensure that my daughter's mental health and safety were intact and she was subsequently released in my care. I am submitting the same complaint/feedback to the Compliance and Quality Department as well as CEO of BJC. The physician and nurse, that initially handled her care should not be able to practice, nor have direct patient care ever again. The same will be reported to Board of Professional License with a request for investigation into the MD or nurse practicing medicine. Clearly they have complete disregard for African Americans as the behavior appeared to be racially motivated. I am available to provide additional context and feedback- in person and or via...
Read moreI went to the Emergency Room due to severe pain in my right leg. I had previously been at my doctors office and told me to go to the emergency room. I could not walk and had to get a wheel chair to leave the Dr. Office. I went to Memorial East as I had previously stayed for 12 days and had a great experience with the Emergency Room and the Staff on level 5. However this visit was different I left in more pain than when I came. The emergency room took me to a room then I got a Ultrasound which detected a Deep Vein Thrombosis DVT (a blood clot) the shift changed and the Doctor came to look at me, she never looked at my leg. I explained that I was taking Oxycontin for my ankles, I have severe arthritis (bone on bone) due to 24 years in the Marine Corps (Infantry). I explained the pain medicine was not relieving me from the pain in my leg (it was severely swollen). She said she would never prescribe that pain medicine as it is dangerous. I understand her stance against Oxycontin, however what was the alliterative to reduce the pain? Which she did not care about, this night shift could care less about my pain, my health, or helping me. I was then checked out and released. I took one step and almost fell, I said I could not walk on my leg. I asked for a wheel chair, finally they gave me one, the pushed me out to the Emergency Room exit and they left me, I wait until my my wife came and she pushed me to the car and helped me into the car. So I left the emergency room with more pain then when I came, I was not offered crutches, pain relief, and had to read the what DVT was and what the precautions were. I now have pain it my other leg and suspect that the blood clot has moved. The paperwork I received from the nurse states if I have the same pain in the other leg, I need to go to the Emergency Room. This hospital is close to my house, however I am reluctant to go to this place and receive terrible care. I am informing Tricare about the disregard of my care. The Dr. and nurses on the night shift did not care about me, I believe I have blood clots in the other leg and cannot walk, lets see how...
Read moreTwo trips to the ER in less than a year for my mother & husband. Spoke with patient advocate on the first trip. ER unprofessional, having patients perform urine samples in ER restroom & then carrying their samples through all waiting to be seen. No consideration for my mom's age (84), she sat in waiting room with abdominal pain & nausea for 5 hours. Husband went to ER last night, was admitted. He is a Type 2 Diabetic & had not eaten since 11 a.m. (was admitted around 7:30 p.m.) When he expressed his hunger to the staff, he was told the kitchen was closed and food would have to be brought to him. I ran out to get him a sandwich and delivered it to the ER. It was a complete fiasco trying to get the food to his room, along with a bag for overnight, which included needed tennis shoes for a stress test he is having today. The ER receptionist was condescending & proceeded to give me medical advice on his condition (not anymore qualified than I am). The ER nurse & the charge nurse did call me to explain that my husband misunderstood about the food (no he didn't). He was told the kitchen was closed & that I needed to bring him food. Whoever gave him that information was confused and needs to be trained. Hospitals always have sandwiches on hand i was told by the charge nurse. The ER nurse offered him a sandwich, but my husband was under the impression she would have to purchase it and he didn't want her to have to do that. I plan to speak to Patient Advocacy today, so that no one else goes through this. No spouse should be out at 8:30 p.m. searching for food to bring to the hospital for a patient, nor receiving unsolicited advice from the ER receptionist, nor worrying whether their loved one will receive their food & belongings. We can't be the first patients admitted from the ER during Covid, since we are in the 6th month of the Pandemic. I would not recommend Memorial East. I had high hopes when it first opened, i.e., close to home, new facility, but something is wrong there with communication between staff & procedures or...
