The Navajo Nation has "Land Use Pernits" where a family may live for generations. I have never found a map. Residential addresses are vague enough that they compromise voters rights inspite of families living in a given spot for generations. Be respectful should you accidentally end up in some ones front yard. Don't destroy someone's road that they use to work at the hospital or school by having fun in the mud. Justbecause you can get through wont fix ruts that may remain for years. Shiprock itself, I believe, has religious connotations. Inquire locally.

The Navajo Volcanic Field in New Mexico, which is in the Four Corners area of our American southwest and has about 80 old, eroded volcanic centers. These centers are dated from the Oligocene age to Miocene age. The most famous and well known volcanic “neck” in the area is “The Ship Rock”. Studies of the eruptive centers indicate that they erupted violently, and that the eruption is estimated at 25 to 30 million years ago .

Think Mad Max but in a rental. Navigation spotty but you can’t miss the destination. Mom in laws may try to tell you to turn around. Don’t. You can make it. Also - sometimes there are sandstorms and you can’t see anything - so best to stop so you don’t drive into a ditch. You can mostly see the driving trail, mostly. Absolutely stunning up close!
