Oh No! Champlain Orchards has bought out the Douglas Orchard! This, to me, represents the end of the small family owned orchard in Vermont. Douglas was always my favorite... the best Macs, perfect pumpkins, and a cider donut for the ride home. The owners, never big on conversation as is typical of real Vermonters, still always made you feel welcome.
The whole experience enjoyed for many, many years by locals and visitors alike will be lost now that the orchard is owned by a transplant marketing huckster for Sure. That's all he and his company Champlain Orchards knows about the orchard business... marketing.
With no knowledge of his own as a professional Orchard Man, Champlain Orchards has turned to buying up small local orchards, stealing the secret of their success, and re-selling it as their own. Of that, you can B. Sure.
Sorry Douglas, I hope you got paid well for selling out the reputation you worked so hard to build. We’ll be picking somewhere...

Never will forget being up in a tree picking apples and first hearing the Jamaicans singing old gospel hymns from nearby orchards ... moving enough to make me weep. And Shadow with her mousing skills : / ... the great old cemetery with early morning mist rising over the headstones, Lake Chanplain and the amazing colors of fall, walking to the Teachout store, was amazing scenery to be in, the stomping grounds of Ethan Allen and the Green Mtn Men. Scott's mother's delicious homemade pies ... the gallon of fresh apple cider daily. My dog Jelly passed in 2010, but that summer into fall was her favorite bc she was free to roam the wild.
