I love this tunnel because weather conditions can be so different from one to the other!! There's a lot of history in these tunnels under the Continental Divide, and there are proud crews of workers that serve and protect them! These are the main arteries for transportation and highway shipping toward the west of Colorado. Note, the tunnels have an array of stop lights across the highway prior to entering.. These turn on at regular intervals (about every 1.5 hours; accompanied by a loud siren) to stop regular traffic in order to allow truckers carrying hazardous materials to pass through for the safety of the public.. If something goes wrong in the tunnel with one of them, you wouldn't want to also be in there!

Going through the Rockies on 1-70, you may encounter the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel. It has an elevation of 11,358 and is 1.7 miles long. Construction began in 1973 and was completed in 1979. The tunnel is very spacious inside (not claustrophobic feeling at all), well lit, and has two lanes for one-way traffic. When in Colorado, at the peak of the Rockies, take a pass through the Eisenhower-Johnson Tunnel.

This is a modern engineering marvel named after ww2 5 star General Dwight D Eisenhower who became a US President & Lyndon Baines Johnson was VP then President after JFK assassinated. Located on US 70 the tunnel is at approximately 11,000 ft elevation sea level. Going through the majestic rocky mountains. You can't stop anywhere inside tunnel unless you break down. Winter is the most dangerous time due to snow, ice and freezing rain causing delays for snow/ice removal. Many wild creatures xan be seen outside tunnel such as elk, deer, black bear, racoon, eagle, hawk, falcon and many song birds. This is well worth the trip and is true landmark that the people of Colorado are very proud of. US 70 is a major highway going in a east / west direction. Children love going through this tunnel and are in amazement in it's length going through solid rock. The scenery is simply marvellous, even in June snow is on tops of mountain's. The temperature is cool in summer months and cold during winter however very little humidity. Enjoy the...

September 12th, tunnel closed west bound for construction work with 2 hour delay. (good weather). Why can't CDOT figure out how to work on a road without closing it?

Here's some ideas. -Send commercial traffic over the pass so more than 50 vehicles can get through the tunnel in the 20 minute window you open the road. -Update the road info signs with accurate traffic info. The signs said "20 minute delays". If motorists know, there are alternate routes (I could have headed through Winter Part to Steamboat). -Run two way car traffic through one tunnel? -Have both lanes open in the tunnel. -Fine the construction company for closing the road for 2 hours. In the end poor traffic planning is harmful to Colorado economy and dangerous to motorists who end up out far later then expected trying to get...
