We love the Okefenokee in Georgia and wanted to explore the Louisiana Bayou. Paid for the small boat VIP tour so we could go into the smaller spaces as advertised. Expected it to be eco focused. Instead our tour guide spent quite a bit of time detailing the gruesome ways you hunt and kill alligators, much to my daughter’s horror. I get it, you’re a tough gator hunter, but maybe keep that to yourself when people are here to appreciate the beauty of the Bayou ecosystem. So much for the “preservation” you talk about on your website. We went on the afternoon tour in late June and we did see around 10 alligators, including one big one, which our guide charmed over to our boat with protein snacks, but no other wildlife other than a small turtle and some lovely birds. The portion of the trip where only their smaller boat can go was just a short channel right next to the dock and tour building. I thought paying so much extra for the VIP tour would get us out to some remote and special viewing opportunities but this wasn’t it. This tour was the most expensive thing we did on our vacation and I do not feel it was was worth how much extra we paid for the small boat experience.

Our group had a great time with Captain Trey learning about the plants (including some medicinal info), water resources and animals of the southern LA swamp. He included great cultural and historical information in his presentation as well. This tour company is a small, family-run local business and is definitely worth supporting. FYI, during the tour, our Captain did feed the alligators marshmallows to encourage them to come closer to the boat. Alligators are naturally inclined to evade humans and boats, so without the encouragement of a reward, you're not likely to see them. Also, unlike protein-based rewards, marshmallows have very little nutritive value to an alligator - meaning they will still need to hunt/scavenge to meet all their nutrient needs and won't become dependent on human food. Scavengers like alligators eat far worse of their own accord anyway.

The marsh and (especially) swamp landscape is amazing and a wonderful place to visit. Unfortunately I cannot recommend the Pearl River tour because there is such a deep disconnect between its advertising as an "eco" tour and the actual behaviour of the tour guide. At various times on the tour, wildlife (alligators and raccoons) were baited with (refined sugar) marshmallows to appear and even to perform for the participants. The guide also drove the boat at great speed through the wetlands creating what appeared to be unnecessary noise, wash, wake and emissions solely for the entertainment of the customers. I feel embarrassed to have been a participant and question the ethics of this seemingly irresponsible approach.

This was an unbelievable experience! It felt like I'd stepped into a Jurassic Park movie. The Honey Island Swamp is a hauntingly beautiful place. Captain Pat, a lifelong native, was extremely knowledgeable about the wildlife and plant life of the swamps. He's a great tour guide and made me feel comfortable asking any questions. He found alligators almost immediately and told us about about their living habits. I learned more in one tour than I ever thought possible. I'm a handicapped Golden Girl but I wanted to see it all, so I took the tour in the smallest boat that goes furthest into the swamps and bayous. What a trip I had! Again, Captain Pat came to my rescue, helping me in and out of the boat and trying to keep me comfortable. The Pearl River Eco Tours employees were all friendly and helpful, from the bus driver to the girls selling cold drinks. It's not a typical tourist trap trying to make their money on souvenirs. As a matter of fact, I asked to purchase something to remember the trip by and was offered a granola bar with a laugh and a smile. The trip to the Honey Island Swamp is my favorite memory of my entire visit to New Orleans. Don't pass up a chance to meet some great people, see some gators and learn a little. Thanks for a...

I convinced my husband and 2 sons (20 and 24 years old) to take the swamp tour which is a huge feat by itself. At 7:30am we contacted the company hoping to reserve the 9:45am tour and be picked up at the hotel and they were able to accommodated us when the other tour companies were booked. The bus ride to the site was a 45 minute ride but the driver was friendly and shared some history along the way. Once we got to the tour site we met Capt Trey and his cat Pierre. First impression I honestly thought this guy may be a bore but not long after we started down the bayou...Capt Trey proved me wrong. He was very entertaining and extremely knowledgeable about the bayou and the benefits the swamps have on the eco system. His love of the swamp wildlife was acutely evident as he called out each animal we encountered by name and he even kissed an alligator. The entire tour was interactive and fun....Capt Trey is a prankster so watch out for him. This was my 2nd swamp tour and by far the best...I don’t even remember the name of the first tour company but I will forever remember my time spent on the Pearl River Tour! The price was $50 per person and worthy...
