Mesa Del Contadero in English "Table of the Accountant" or of the accountant, with Contadero having several meanings, in this case, narrow passage. As this was the location along the Jornada Del Muerte and El Camino Real de Tierra Adentro where the livestock accompanying the caravans were counted to see how many perished or were slaughtered on the trail, and in the 1600-1820's taxes levied on the animals brought into Nueva Espana (New Spain..present day Mexico). This Mesa, having sometimes being called Black Mesa appeared on a 1773 Spanish map as Mesa de Senecu. This name given to the mesa has a meaning of a family of indigenous peoples from the pueblo of the Piro Indians. In which the history here dates back to before 1581.
