The Vegetable Shop at Chino Farm — Local services in Solana Beach

We're only a few short miles away but seem to talk about going more than actually going. Its a shame, especially in summer because the strawberries and corn are amazing.

Well, we decided to treat friends and drove over. Staff was friendly as usual and observing pandemic protocol. Everyone, staff and customers were wearing masks.

We got strawberries (both the regular and little French varieties) and corn for us and two friends. It was very much worth the driving and delivery duties. Our friends enjoyed both and felt like they'd been given a special treat.

A few things to keep in mind. The strawberries are picked ripe so don't plan on keeping them around for days. They are ready to eat. Delicious! Many were eaten plain like candy.. The remainder were great as strawberry short cake. What a treat. As for the corn, its sweet as any corn you'll find. Cook it right away or the sugar turns to starch. And don't over...

I can't say enough good things about Chino's, if you want to know their history, they were profiled in The New Yorker magazine years ago. Short version: Alice Waters says Chino's showed her how good vegetables can be. They are somewhat reserved by nature, but if you ask a question there is no limit to what you might learn. Nothing is cheap, but you will get more quality than you pay for, even at their prices. Best fresh corn west of the Mississippi. I was out exploring on my ebike and pulled into the Shop. They had the most beautiful presentation of fresh vegetables and strawberries. I couldn't resist so I picked up Brussel sprouts, red onions and more. she tallied it up and went to pay with card. she said they only take cash check or Venmo. I only had credit and expected to walk away empty handed, but she said "just come back tomorrow with the cash" and let me leave with the produce! Who does that?
