Stone Mountain
Description
Stone Mountain is a city near Atlanta, Georgia. It’s a gateway to Stone Mountain Park, named for the vast monolith at its center. Etched into the rock’s side, the Confederate Memorial Carving depicts Civil War generals Stonewall Jackson and Robert E. Lee, plus President Jefferson Davis. A trail and the Summit Skyride cable car lead to the rock's peak. Buildings dating back to 1793 fill the park's Historic Square.

The drive takes a little longer for us to get to from Winston-Salem, something like an hour, but we absolutely love the hike because it's so family-friendly. We brought the entire family once. Impressed, a hiker stopped us to ask my Grandma how old she was as she was hiking to the top of the summit with us. If you do the whole trail it's a really good workout. There's an easy way where you start at the top then circle around down the mountain or the hard way where you start towards the bottom and work your way up. Either way, 70+ years old and she keeps inspiring all of us. Otherwise, it provides a lot of scenic views along the way with waterfalls and outlooks, a variety of routes for all hiking levels, and leaves you feeling like you got a great workout at the end of the day. Love it!

Beautiful park and campground. The facilities are a little older but the showers are hot and mostly clean. The trails are well maintained and the maps for the area were extremely helpful. The only downside is the park rangers here. On my most recent trip (August 2020), we had a beer sitting out on the table in our site. I understand this is not allowed, however the rangers did not handle it well. They were threatening and had their hands on their guns while they were talking to us. For the next two days, they would constantly drive by our site, stop, and stare in to see if we had alcohol. It was annoying to say the least and we did feel comfortable since this was how they handled one beer.

Nice cool ~40s_F during 2024.12.19 for a hike in Stone Mountain S.P., 2x water-crossing - got my feet wet 😅. And except for the ~1 mi of leaves covered "trail", the Trails were in good condition 👍 Also, the Restrooms beside the Trailhead were opened and clean (many thanks to the SMSP). Encountered a total of ~15 people; 4 at/around Stone Mountain summit, and ~11 at/near Wolf Rock. Also while i was topping-up the Engine Oil for my Tiguan, a man approached me and asked whether i need "help" (i.e. "car breakdown"??) 😊 i replied that i am "good", that its just my Tiguan is "burning" Engine Oil excessively 😊 i thanked him for his kind offer to help 🙃 Everyone's friendly and nice 👍👍👍
