If you have ever wanted to play golf in a living postcard, Downriver Golf Course in Spokane is your spot. Towering Ponderosa pines line the fairways like quiet spectators, watching you with both admiration and judgment. The fairways are gorgeous and inviting, but if your ball drifts into those trees, kiss it goodbye. Those woods do not forgive, and they do not forget. Once you are in there, you better bring a machete and a plan.
The course layout will test you. There are some dogleg holes that feel like they were designed by a retired Navy pilot with a grudge. Just when you think you know where the flag is, it tucks away around a corner like it is hiding from the IRS. But the payoff is worth it. The greens are absolutely beautiful. They roll true, they hold well, and they give you just enough hope to make that six foot putt feel like destiny instead of desperation.
Now letβs talk about the clubhouse. The food hits the spot, the drinks are cold, and the vibes are just right. The ladies in the clubhouse are incredible. They are friendly, professional, and yes, absolutely stunning. You walk in for a hot dog and suddenly you are wondering if you need to shave before your next round.
Downriver is one of those courses that gives you a little bit of everything. Beauty, challenge, peace, and just enough pain to remind you that golf is not supposed to be easy. It is a Spokane treasure and the kind of place that makes you want to come back the very next day, even if you lost half a box of balls and your dignity.

But... the pace of play was SLLOOOWWWW. There were sometimes five groups stacked up at par 3's. There was no marshal or course staff to be seen to help keep things moving. The group directly in front of us was especially slow because "we are playing for money" so took their time with every shot... every putt.... you'd have thought I was watching the US Open play out in front of me. I'd pay the bets off if it meant keeping them moving.
It isn't much fun to wait minutes for every shot you take.
Bottom line, nice course but get somebody out there in a cart to watch what's going on. There were multiple people working the pro shop. Send one of them out to monitor pace of play. There was a starter working at the first tee box so you have the idea but that is where...
Β Β Β Read moreThe golf course is a terrible neighbor. They do nothing to mitigate the impact they have on those of us who share this neighborhood. It should be a symbiotic relationship- residents keep up our homes and yards and the golf course respects our need for peace and safety. They benefit from our neighborhood, but we pay the price with speeding drivers, blocked driveways, car alarms, loud patrons, and 6am drumming events that wake up everyone in a two block radius. I've reached out twice asking that they post a calendar of events and do their part to mitigate traffic and speeding but they act annoyed and do nothing. I invite the golf course again to contact me so that we can work together on this. We can solve these problems with small effort and great benefits. Let's not wait until someone's kid or dog gets hit by a speeder trying to make...
