It is strange that reviewers are talking about negative reviews but all the reviews except mine are only 5 star. Is Brown's Orchard successfully appealing to Google to get any negative reviews deleted? I have noticed that often my negative reviews of restaurants mysteriously disappear from Google. I wonder how long my review will stay up?
What I like about Brown's is that they do have a few nice in season fruits and vegetables and I like that their apple juice is fresher than that in the grocery store, although I don't like the way they spice it. It tastes of cinnamon which I don't much like in my apple juice.
Now for the bad things. 1. Their bakery is awful. Their bakery products taste like Giant's and Saubel's bakery products--absolutely loaded with hydrogenated oils and artificial ingredients. My neighbor much prefers my baked goods including my homemade apple dumplings to Brown's or anyone else's in the area. I tried Brown's apple dumplings once so I can tell the main difference is that my pastry dough is much better quality. I am probably using better ingredients in other areas as well because I use real butter and real vanilla, which is expensive so most bakeries substitute vanillin and hydrogenated oils. Their apple dumpling sauce was a little strange so it has to be the quality of their ingredients is cheap. I just will not eat Brown's bakery goods and neither will my boyfriend. I would love to be able to buy baked goods with natural ingredients like I use in my kitchen so that I don't always have to cook but I just can't eat their nasty food.
I would like to buy fudge when I go there but their fudge usually looks like it is old and dried out. If they can't sell it fast enough for it to stay soft, then they need to buy smaller batches.
A lot of their products are not the high quality products that you would expect to be able to buy in a small speciality market. For example, tonight we went there for the first time in ages to get some apple juice...I saw a bag near the register that said something like caramel flavored snack or something. It was clearly (very clearly!) just Marten's Ditto's (but the caramel flavor) repackaged in a clear wrapping and marked up double. No ingredients listed. Well, the Marten's identical caramel snack as well as the Ditto's is absolutely loaded with unhealthy diacetyl or very similar artificial butter flavoring.
Do you go to a store like Brown's to buy products full of artificial ingredients just like at a discount grocer but priced much higher? I guess that business strategy is working for Brown's. Apparently, a lot of shoppers can't see that Brown's is using a cute atmosphere with little substance. But they won't get my money with that stuff. We walked out just buying one pint of apple juice and one bag of fresh lima beans.
I would have liked to buy some cake, maybe cookies, and other things. But I will not buy bad quality baked goods that are loaded with artificial ingredients, which is why we only go to Brown's one time a year. And each time I leave thinking, why did I bother to come here?
It is very disappointing because I would love to have more places to eat around here that use healthy ingredients. The restaurants and bakeries in our community are mainly revolting. Cooking from scratch is really exhausting and it would be great to be able to eat out and have the food taste good.
So I am stuck cooking again tonight. Well, that's life in a...
Read moreCute place. I wish they we're open until 9 pm, but that is a personal preference only. It is a clean place that offer, fresh fruit and vegetables. They have a deli with fresh sliced luncheon meat. They have you standard variety (Ham, Turkey, roast beef etc.) However, they only offer, Luncheon meat from 2-3 maybe suppliers. They sell dips, chow chow, relishes and jams and salsas from a few company's. They sell their own premade meals. The prices for those are relatively high considering you could eat at a restaurant and get sides and a. Salad for about the same price or 2 dollars more for a complete meal. They have all types of baked goods. Breads, cookies, pies, cakes etc. They have a discount or seconds rack by the baked goods they offer seconds or soon to be expired baked goods for 20-40 % off. There is a wine shop here but they close early around 7pm I believe. You will also find some jewelry, limited home decore, perhaps a few shirts and scarfs. They have a coffee/dandwhich shoppe. Their prices are high. Their service is horrid. Twice I have waited 30+ minutes for 2 sandwhiches and 2 drinks. They workers in the coffee shoppe are more interested in chatting with each other then serving customers. I would Not recommend the coffee shoppe. There is also an ice cream stand outside to the far right, if you don't pay attention you might miss it. Overall, I like the place. However the employee 's are not friendly, more like robots only speak when spoken too and no real interaction. The management is okay, again not all that friendly for a local place. And the ladies that make the fudge are down right rude and unhelpful. If you want fresh produce with acceptable prices, don't mind being treated like your money is all that matters, this is your place. If want a hometown, welcoming place to shop for years.. This may not be the...
Read moreMy aunt has been singing the praises of this place for years and we finally got around to checking it out this weekend after visiting friends in nearby Spring Grove, PA. This is a very nicely laid out farm market with something for everyone. When you first walk in you are greeted by fresh fruits and veggies, I scored some baby potatoes for a dinner I'm making this week and also a red, ripe tomato which after slicing into this evening I'm mad at myself for not buying more - definitely the best tomato I've had so far this season. Since hubby was waiting in the car with our golden retriever I had to be pretty quick but I did take the time to check out all the different areas and picked up some dutch macaroni salad, cream of crab soup and some snickerdoodles along with an apple cider slush for the drive home. I was very impressed with the homemade soup selection and will definitely be back to try several more varieties. The dutch macaroni salad didn't quite hit the mark for hubby and I, I liked the sweetness but the pasta was a bit to al dente for my liking and just overall felt like something was lacking. I'd have to give the Cream of Crab Soup a B, nicely flavored but needed a dash of Old Bay and the crab meat didn't taste fresh, a bit dense and not what I'm used to. I have to be honest and state that part of the reason I bought the Snickerdoodles was because the week before we picked up a couple of the same style cookies from Prettyboy Market and my golden retriever (who is super picky and has always turned his nose up to sweets) went crazy for them so I figured I'd see if it was just a fluke. I gave a small piece tonight and boy what a mistake that was, looks like I'm gonna be sneaking these when he's not in the room because he goes...
