I am an honors graduate from Lane. I spent 6 years there getting my AAS in Computer Networking (while working), and walked away with an honors degree and 2 optional "career pathway certificates" for network admin & security. It has been over a year since my graduation in 18 and I am struggling to find stable work in the Eugene/ Springfield area. Something is seriously wrong with this college and the Computer Info. Tech (CIT) department. Like many say, the corruption at the top is real. My average tuition to attend every term was roughly $1,000. The majority covered by FAFSA. If LCC is getting this much each term, how can everything be so underfunded? Through all 6 years of my enrollment (12-`18) I was training with Windows 7 PC's, and extremely lazy assignments. Win 7 is not proper training for any student today, as most businesses have moved to Win 10. The lazy assignment writing is a joke. Most weekly assignments teach you nothing, other than to follow a laundry list of tasks you will forget the following week. Quizzes and Final exam questions can easily be searched on Google for correct answers. Most questions are taken from outdated books or canned quizzes already found online. Instructors frequently give long, dry lectures that take up most of class time, and struggle to answer questions outside the script. I was there for the major renovation to Center bldg and surrounding areas. This major construction was paid for by voter grants and the state, not enrollment fees. All students are forced to pay useless fees like "health", "technology", and "transportation" fees for busses, even though I never once used one. While I was there, the CIT tutor room had 1 main tutor who could not have cared less about helping anybody. He sat on his laptop most of the time playing games w/ headphones on. The 2 "certificates" I earned are not worth squat to all employers I've interviewed with, they ended up being little more than bait to get me to take more classes. None of the IT classes here earn you any kind of certification, and only 1 class was advertised as a prep class for COMPTIA. While I was there, 2 classes were actually removed from my degree because the only instructor had been fired with no replacement in sight. This college become more of a business each year, not meant to teach, but a 10-week meat grinder for earnings. What needs to happen is the vast sum of money spent on top Admin paychecks and landscaping, needs to be redistributed more evenly to pay for adequate instructors and training material. Replace the outdated and barely functioning equipment with modern equipment, and monitor it so it is not stolen! More focus is needed on the trades like carpentry and electrical. This college needs to be more than just a steppingstone to UofO. Let university handle abstract degrees such as Philosophy and Business, Lane should rebrand itself as anyone's trade school, and help provide proper work education to fill the employment gaps this country is currently going through. This is not to say everyday was terrible. I did make friends, and meet some instructors that actually gave a damn and helped me learn (RateMyProf!) I challenged myself and learned alot, but unfortunately it has not been enough. I found that in my 2nd year classes I had become better at passing tests and using Google, than actually learning the material. It is true that A DEGREE ALONE WILL NOT LAND YOU...
Read moreI'm kind of shocked at all the negative reviews I've been reading for Lane, so I figured I'd throw my two cents in for what it's worth. I also realized that i think the most recent review was from 4 years ago, so maybe my review will help those currently contemplating this college. So I got my GED at Lane back in 2010 and it was a decent but brief experience. I then took two classes in 2015 and didn't have any issues getting financial aid. I applied on the FAFSA website and everything went through and was applied automatically to my LCC account aside from having to sign a couple things electronically for the additional loan offer I had to take since the Pell Grant didn't cover all my costs. Now I'm currently pursuing the AAOT transfer degree at Lane and my experience has been pretty decent so far. Financial aid hasn't been an issue. I applied on the FAFSA website, got the Pell grant and loan offers and it's been more than enough to cover my classes. I will agree though with some comments I saw that working with Lane's financial aid can potentially be a headache. If you have questions or need clarification on something, it can be a bit of a run around to get answers, but if you're persistent and direct you can get the information you need. I also saw some reviews about Lane having lots of added charges and while it does suck sometimes, it depends on the classes and you can view the information clearly on your "myFinances" tab on your account. Lastly, in regards to another comment I saw in a review: I have found that some of the courses do feel like it's information you could get better guidance on from watching YouTube videos or Google searching, but you won't get college credits or a degree or a job from watching YouTube videos or searching on Google. So in my opinion I think it's worth giving Lane a try if it...
Read moreGood teachers. Terrible administration - including advisors, enrollment services and financial aid. They make it harder to enroll and pay for classes than to actually take the classes. There is always some issue going on that has prevented me from receiving or delayed my receiving of financial aid, making it extremely difficult to pay for classes. If you are already covered for college financially, go here. If you need to use financial aid, seriously, LOOK EVERYWHERE AND ANYWHERE ELSE! I have struggled with trying to keep up at Lane financially; most terms I was not able to purchase or rent any textbooks until the fourth or fifth week of the term.
There are always technological difficulties in classes or around campus. Professors have trouble delivering content to students, and one professor blatantly blamed the administration for these issues. When teachers are vocally protesting the administration in class because they are impeding academic stability in the classroom, you know there is a serious issue with your institution. I can't even access my enrollment verification or records (you know, from their freaking main page called MyLane), since that website is not available from any browser BESIDES INTERNET EXPLORER - WHICH HAS BEEN DEFUNCT FOR YEARS!!
