I have yet to visit the Mohawk General Store. My Great Grandparents, Marvin and Kathleen (Campbell) Hammit built this store. Their children, Norman, Dorcas and Andrew Jerome (Jerry, my grandpa) were left motherless at young ages when Kathleen died from tuberculosis. Marvin could not care for the children and run the store without his wife. He took Norman and set off to California to find other work, leaving Dorcas and Jerry with his widowed mother Sarah Francis on the family farm. It is said there’s a little blond girl ghost at the store, believed to be my great aunt Dorcas.
I moved from Oregon in 1971. I’ve recently been back to visit family in Portland three times but have not made it to the Mohawk Valley! It’s a must for my next visit! I just hope the store will still be open and I can see the old dance hall upstairs and meet you all that have preserved this...

Read moreLove this market! My husband likes the fresh jerky. I am grateful for the assortment of essentials and the fact that stock is up to date and staff are friendly! Lots of energy drink options, but also canned food, cereal, household supplies, candy, milk, cheese, chips… We spent 8 years on the road in an RV. So we have seen a lot of little markets. This one is one of the best. The wood floor and rustic charm only make me love it more! It’s a great place to stop before heading up into the mountains or to simply get a few groceries. Yes, it might be a bit more in price than Walmart, but compared to driving into town… and knowing I’m supporting a small business…...
