We stayed one night at Rooterville Animal Sanctuary and overall had a good experience. We booked the covered wagon, which was definitely a fun and unique place to stay, though it’s basically just an RV with a wagon theme. Still, it was peaceful, clean, and had some really pretty views. I’d give the glamping part about 3.5–4 stars.
The animals were definitely a highlight we got to see ponies, pigs, goats, and even a highland cow! Most of them were really friendly and it was fun to get up close to them.
We also booked the Highland Cow Cuddling Experience for two people, which cost $155.95 before taxes for 45 minutes. Unfortunately, that part didn’t really meet expectations. We showed up a few minutes late and it seemed like the next group had already started and was feeding the cows, something we were supposed to do during our session. We only got about 15 minutes with the highland cow before they switched us out and left us with the baby cows for the rest of the time. The staff member who was supposed to stay with us and give us the snacks for the cows ended up leaving with the other group, and we never got the free reusable bag or the promised snacks either, which was disappointing, especially for the price. I’d rate the Highland Cow experience more like 2.5–3 stars.
Overall, Rooterville is a beautiful sanctuary and we still enjoyed our stay, but the premium animal experience was handled pretty poorly for the cost. Because of that, we probably wouldn’t book another experience with them
Edited response to owners response,
Thanks for getting back to us. I do want to clarify a few things, because we actually did communicate some of this in advance.
We did ask about possibly being a few minutes late, and we were told that it would be fine. We also let the staff know (both over the phone and in person at the store) that we had a cow cuddling appointment planned. There was no indication at any point that being just a few minutes late would result in missing the full experience or that staff would be sent home so quickly—especially considering that most places typically allow a 10–15 minute grace period.
As for checkout, when my husband called to confirm, he was asked about a check out time and was told we were fine, since there was no one coming in after us, and we did leave before 3:30 and we were informed that was a late checkout. We also took time to clean up and sort the linens as a courtesy.
We went to get food because we expected there to be heat-and-eat meals available as mentioned, but didn’t find any. If that had been communicated more clearly, we could have planned differently and been back earlier.
We understand you’re disappointed, and we’re sorry things didn’t go smoothly. We were genuinely excited about the experience, and it’s unfortunate that miscommunication and a tight timeline affected how things unfolded. That said, we do appreciate the time we did get with the Highland cow and the baby cows.
Thanks again for responding—we just wish expectations on both sides had...
Read moreI honestly can not say enough positive things about this place. My dream came true when my hubby booked us to stay 2 nights at the Sanctuary. Elaine is incredibly sweet, down to earth, and laid back. She was wonderful in the cow cuddling and let us roam as we wanted and always asked if we needed anything. The helping hand on the farm is attentive to the animals and seems like a very kind man. The animals are SO incredibly sweet. I looked forward to spending time with cows all my life and it didnt disappoint! We visited them often at the pasture fences, right near our wagon and it was wonderful seeing them when I woke up.Allbthe animal roam with lots of beautiful land to wonder. The land is well taken care of, wven the pig pens are so nicely kept for the animals to graze and enjoy. My husband and I got very close to the farm pups, especially Bear who welcomed us. Glitter was the 1st pig to greet us hello! Cookie the pig was our girl both days, she followed us around and warmed our hearts, she reminded me of our sweet dog we lost only a few months ago. To wake up and walk out with my coffee to the beautiful morning sight of pigs grazing, the small pond fountain going, and the cows chomping on their breakfast made me warm and fuzzy! The gift shop has lots of cute things and treats that all the animals can eat! The wagons are SO cozy, nicely decorated, and the ac/heat was great in it! It was the best 2 days I've had in a while. My heart needed some healing and this place really helped with that. We plan on returning every year. We were blessed with beautiful weather there both days. This trip will always be a core memory for me for the rest of my life. I hope to donate as often as we can afford to help and definitely visit every year. My hubby and I even discussed with each other possibly volunteering a day or two on the farm during our next stay. I wish we lived so much closer! I will miss this place and the peace...
Read moreWow! All can say is Wowowow! Amazing!! So I booked online to ensure my date was available and then I called to ask a few more minor questions… my phone call was always answered with outstanding customer service! I love that especially once I found out everyone working/living at the farm is physically not at a desk, yet could take my calls with both hands full to say the least! Well, let me first tell…COLD COLD CENTRAL A/C is probably the first amenity I noticed and was so incredible!!!!! The glamping coach was soooo clean and perfectly staged with perfect toiletries, towels, coffee and any needed for a glamorous stay!! EXACTLY LIKE THE PICTURES…Now here is the BEST part…. such a beautiful farm and beautiful animals!!! They roam free in the evenings to morning so you open your coach door and have the very best view of furry friends EVERYWHERE while morning coffee is brewing!! My daughter enjoyed “farming” and feeding the animals in the morning, she got a charge out of the hen laying fresh eggs. There was no stone left unturned in respect to amenities… camp fire with color changing fire wood and an amazing wooden gazebo with a high powered fan and benches to relax and enjoy the breeze on the pond, just to name a few. I was in paradise from the moment I got out of my car and met the most amazing husband and wife team who genuinely wanted to make sure we had everything we “needed” ….we had EVERYTHING… and more!! Thank u so much we will...
