A great place to view all of the sights of the Newberry Caldera including The Big Obsidian Flow, Paulina and East Lake, and the the Caldera.
The road to the top is unpaved and narrows to a single lane as you approach the summit.
Parking is limited and you might have to wait for a space to open up.
You will find amazing views of the surrounding Cascade Mountains including Mt. Adams and the Newbery Caldera flanked by the Paulina and East Lakes.
The Big Obsidian Flow from the south wall of the Caldera is front on the lakes.
A parking fee is required for all of the sights in the Newberry National Volcanic Monument.

Read moreWe visited here a few weeks ago when the smoke came into Bend pretty heavy from wildfires in the surrounding areas. Besides the smoke obstructing the view, its a very cool place. Usually youd be able to see East and Paulina lakes, the big lava flow etc, but you could just barely make out the flow, no sign of the adjancent lake. Its pet friendly, kid friendly and educational. Theres squirells, deer and bunnys we passed on the way up and down and really enjoyed getting out and about in the fresh air above all the smoke. Definitly reccomend visiting if your in the area. Read moreWe took the trail. It's a decent little jaunt up about 3 miles. The first mile meanders not gaining much elevation. Then where there's a parking lot 1 mile in, the trail starts climbing. It's never technical or hard to follow, but dusty at times. We were surprised that we never heard the car traffic going up the road. It was disappointing that people could drive up to the exact same spot, but then again, not everyone can make this hike. I will say even the trucks going down the road were washboarding and going slow. There are a couple rocky outcroppings along the way to get some photos, but the best most expansive views were...
