I have been attending the Williams County Fair for 30+ years. I grew up in Williams county, my brother and I showed sheep at the fair for all 9 or 10 years we were eligible. I am increasingly disappointed in the decline of this fair.
Every year there are less and less vendors, less things to see and less things to do. The first thing my wife said was how empty everything was this year. There are only 2 antique tractors, fewer food vendors, and the vendors that are there are all very similar.
The rides being at the south end continues to annoy me. Not only do I have almost ZERO reason to walk the west side of the fair as an adult, but I tend to spend less time at the fair because there is nothing on the midway that brings people together. When I do get to the rides, I have to struggle to push my child's stroller over the wires that run the rides.
I am in the camp that the rides should be returned to their original location. I have spoken to several Poor Jack employees that have been working there since I was a kid and they also agree. If there is some executive at Poor Jack saying no to this idea, then someone on the fair board should have the strength to fight back.
Last thing I will mention is the merchants building. These used to completely fill up with vendors. Not only that but they needed spill over space with tents on either end. There used to be an extra tent set up by the senior fair board office. Now, the few merchants that set up will just put out a bowl of candy and not even be present in their booth. This is the most pathetic and scariest part of the current fair. With the layout as it is, there is no reason for people to make rounds through these buildings, no reason to run into people and friends.
It is obvious that this fair board has lost the plot. They have made too many bad decisions and are slowly and surely killing this fair and...

Read moreI am utterly appalled to hear that the fair is hiring the notorious Hugo Liebel, who owns a poor elephant named Nosey to give rides at the fair. Hugo Liebel, has been cited by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) again and again for mistreating Nosey by shackling her with short chains, denying her veterinary care, and failing to handle her safely. Last year, Liebel was ordered to pay $7,500 to settle charges of nearly three dozen animal welfare violations. According to a board-certified veterinarian and elephant expert, Nosey's case is "the worst, most prolonged, documented example of an uncorrected case of suffering and abuse in an elephant I have ever reviewed." PETA had informed them yet they still signed Nosey on. Please spread the word and help this...
