Saw Urinetown last year and loved it. Saw La Cage this year and was embarrassed for the cast. It's selling well but anyone who knows the show, I imagine, will be equally disappointed. George was the only character who seemed to understand the material and the nuances of his character. His voice was also the best in the cast. I know this show well so perhaps I expected it to be what it should be. A love story that has some amazing musical numbers, great dancers who can CAN CAN, and characters who understand the balance between acting campy vs being a forced character and self-indulgent. I took a friend who didn't know the show and found many moments "odd", and asked me about it. I was unable to understand the casting choices and/or decisions made for many of the characters. There's a "bird" number that was beyond comprehension. Regardless of my disappointment in the production, I'm glad to see that shows of this nature are being produced within the villages.
