Carlton Peak is a summit in the Sawtooth Mountains in southern Tofte Township, Cook County, in northeastern Minnesota in the United States. In 1848, Reuben B. Carlton of Fond du Lac, Minnesota, ascended the peak with Col. Charles Whittlesey, who was participating in a geological survey expedition.

Whether you want to hike all the way up or drive all the way up the minimal maintenance road (high clearance vehicle recommended), it is an awesome place to explore. There are two peaks within a few minutes hike from eachother with amazing views. The hike is fairly rugged but very fun and scenic. One of the coolest hikes. Closest thing to the mountains in Minnesota!

WARNING DO NOT TAKE THE LOW MAINTENANCE ROAD. A truck could make it but you could easily get stuck, especially in the winter. HIKE/PARK FROM TEMPERANCE. Hike itself is pretty with an amazing lookout at the peak. Highly recommend if you don’t take the road up, very treacherous for any car in the winter or non 4 wheel drive car.

One of my favorite North Shore hikes. Panoramic views of the lake and forest. An unforgettable hike. Hiking over rock and roots in many places. Wear your boots. Well worth the effort. Enter from Hwy 2, My Britton parking lot to shorten the hike. Enjoy!

There's two different trails to the peak. One is much longer than the other. I took the short trail. Overall, it's a moderate (for an amateur hiker) hike to the top. The trail is mostly in the woods and has tree roots and large rocks as you get closer to the peak. Highly recommend this hike especially if you're wanting breath taking...
