Ho Chunk Black River Falls, lets start by saying FALLS is the take away of my stay. So to begin I decided to take a short get away and to take a breather and for a 2 1/2 hour drive the distance was good. when pulling up the place looks kept up. After getting parked and walked in we notice a fairly decent entry but no real direction of hotel vs. casino and seems that short staffed. Found the hotel desk and was pleased with the check in. We got a Jr. Suite and when getting into the room it was decent size and looked modern. unfortunately after getting into the room it was definitely not cleaned as one would expect for a higher grade room (though all rooms should be cleaned equally). So decided heck will go down to the casino and try my luck, grab a bite to eat, then go back to the room and relax and catch up on some work. Casino was fine with plenty of slot machines to go around. When it was time for eating, well the buffet is only open on Wednesdays and most food places around the casino are closed on Sunday which left the Black River Bistro inside the casino and we went up to order and got told that about 40% of the items were unavailable to order. Does not make since so we decided to order a BLT and Bacon Cheeseburger with the only option of fries with both. So after waiting 20-25 minutes to get the food we were hungry and ate the sub par food that had no flavor and some under cooked. Also while we were there the staff got tired of working and just closed the bistro. So finally headed back to room my stomach felt upset and did not feel good so hoping to go back to my room to relax I get in and sit on the couch and then non stop jumping, yelling, crying, etc. from the room above us. So figured it would stop after a few minutes I waited and then 30 minutes later it was still going. in this time still feeling ill from the food. I called front desk and got 3 times no one is available... so 4th time I got to talk to Lucas and he apologized and was quick to come up with a solution which was nice. He offered to put us in same type of room on top floor so no noise above us to let us show the head housekeeper the issues in our room which she completely agreed. So moral of this review, if your here for the slots and to get moving it is a good place. If your looking for a place to stay, eat, and play slots BEWARE and would recommend a different location. Update So it gets even worse. So been waiting for a mailer with thinking a free buffet and maybe a room for Sunday thru Thursday as signed up for the rewards and never received anything and so I called and they said we won’t receive any kind of mailer until probably end of December to January. So I asked why is that and the response was a probation time so they can monitor our play. What? You want a new member that loss some okay money in your casino and you won’t give any comps for them to come back and probably lose more, just don’t understand. So I wanted to see when and if the comp comes thru I was thinking I could use it at hochunk wisconsin dells to check that casino out and wow they told me you can not use the comp from one casino at another, what?!? Your the same name HoChunk. Well when we are near another one will stop blow our points off of reward card and never go to another HoChunk affiliated hotel/casino. Bally’s and Rhythm City Casinos in the Quad Cities Illinois treat me a lot better and...
Read moreI took my mom here for Mother's Day and it started off great. Mom actually won a little bit of money and we decided to try out their buffet, and it was the worst decision we could have made. It honestly ruined the whole experience for us. First, you don't pay when you enter and they only had one person "greeting" and taking people's money as they left. Let me tell you Temporary Badge #13 was far from friendly. So that was a good first impression. It is quite expensive, but we knew it was because they served prime rib, and neither of us are big red meat eaters. We did our research on the website first, 20 foot salad bar, chicken, and desserts. We figured we could totally make a meal out of this. Well, we might have been able too but the buffet was empty of food, plates, and servers. We watched a woman who waited entirely too long to be seated, cut her own piece of meat because nobody was there to do it! We went to the salad bar first, there were no plates at half the buffet tables, the salad bar consists of mostly mayonnaise premade salads, there was no cheese stocked the entire time we were there, and their dressings are in squirt bottles. Once done with our salads, we went to go get some chicken or pasta. Well the pasta sauce, gravies, and nacho cheese were nothing but congealed messes. So I opted for the red potatoes sitting in butter. Which turned out to not even be fully cooked. After we managed to scrap a plate together we went just to check out if there was anything worth having for dessert, and to the surprise of no one, the dessert area was almost completely empty. My mom finally found someone who was working close to the buffet and told her about our concerns and by the time we were leaving our table she was finally making an effort to restock the buffet. We were greeted again by temporary bage #13, who never asked us how anything was, told us our total, took our ridiculous amount of $40 and didn't even thank us. We will never be return to the casino or this restaurant. If you are looking for a fun place to go drive the extra hour or two and go somewhere else. I know I...
Read moreThe aesthetics of the casino really give it a almost Las Vegas like feel. A great variety of gamimg options. Nice bar and great music. Four stars!
The only real disappointment was the buffet [2 stars). Over $20 a person and the food and service was not good. No warm welcome or greeting by the waitstaff. We waited 20 minutes for a waitress to get our beverage requests and bring our beverages and they never returned. Two young ladies (waitstaff) chatted while pushing in chairs rather than monitoring customer tables or asking if we wanted refills. The dinning area was less than 1/4 full, so it was not terribly busy. Even buffets require an element of service.
The casino has a beautiful buffet area. However, why have small table off to the side with a stained old crockpot with soup in it. Furthermore, there was no label to identify what kind of soup was in the crockpot. Why don't you have soups in warming pots on the buffet? Don't let the ragged old crockpot detract from your beautiful buffet.
The crab legs were in a warming pan with a stainless cover on them. As a result they were over cooked, harder to pry the meat out of the shell and the meat was chewy. This really a waste of a qaulity product that many would come to the buffet to eat. In addition there is serious quality control issues. For example, some shrimp were crispy and smaller then the next batch came out with soggy breading. The same was true for the breaded fish.
I had a splended Easter meal last month and tonight was a total let down. I am extremely disappointed and most likely will never eat there again unless they make some setious ajustments. It was my wife's birthday and she was equally disapointed in her meal. I sure hope you take my suggestions seriously. If not your buffet will not see many returning customers. A Friday night should be a busy night for a buffet, if it is not then you really need to up your game. Go for qaulity and...
