We reserved seats on the Saratoga, Corinth & Hudson "Autumn Explorer" train ride for the third Saturday in October. Our plans came together very late, so we ended up having to reserve seats in the vintage Kayadeross Pullman car because all of the other enclosed cars were sold out. Honestly, that may have actually worked out better for us. While there were only eight seats total in the partially restored vintage Pullman car, they were very comfortable and possibly had the best scenic view on the entire train. We had a 45 minute drive to the station and arrived there 15 minutes before the train departed, but I'd suggest arriving earlier than that if possible. All of the railroad staff that we encountered were friendly and very helpful. Tiffany, our extroverterted car host, was a natural as a host. She's definitely a talker, but that made for a very relaxed, educational, and enjoyable train ride. Tiffany is very knowledgeable about the history and operations of this railroad and shared a lot of that information with our group. We got to see some nice scenery during the 90 minute ride, although much of the foliage was already past peak color by that date. Our Pullman car seats were $65/ea, or $73.50/ea with tax & fees. There are other less expensive seating options available but, again, our seats were very comfortable and our car interior was a bit nicer and more intimate than the standard coach cars. We definitely want to do this train ride again, but maybe a week or two earlier in the season (late Sept - very early Oct) to try and see more foliage color. This railroad offers a number of scenic train rides and related rail events throughout the entire year, so check their website for info. Purchasing ride tickets in advance is definitely recommended for preferred seating. Enjoy, and thanks...
Read moreI am a major railfan and train nerd. This was so much fun. My wife and I got tickets for the open air car, which is a fenced in picnic table on a flatbed train car right behind the engine. The staff was friendly and knowledgeable, the process of getting our tickets and boarding was super simple. They have little souvenirs that are reasonably priced, the train left the station on time and we just couldn’t have been happier. By chance we picked the perfect day to go. It was cool in the morning and got warmer as the ride went on. We went down the line about a half an hour, and the train stopped and reversed back to station. Overall my trip, the “Autumn Express”, lasted a little over an hour.
The best part of the trip was definitely the ride but that wasn’t the only good part. Once we got back to the station, we got to speak with the engineer. learn a little history of the train as well as the heritage railway and how they maintain the tracks, the locomotive, and everything else to make the trip possible. Me being a big kid at heart even got to climb up in the cab and toot the horn a couple of times which checks so many things off my bucket list, possibly a once in a lifetime opportunity… unless I buy tickets and go again!
I highly recommend this experience to anyone that likes trains or just wants a nice day out with friends or family. Great for all...
