Great river for canoeing. I think some of the reviews mentioning beaver dams, tiny river, etc. are describing the upper reaches of the river, above Cranberry Lake. This river from Ogdensburg, where it empties into the St. Lawrence River, is very canoe friendly. Not so much for motorboats (although sections of it are very good, from Heuvelton, below the dam, there is a public boat launch. one can navigate in a powerboat, from there to Eelwire State Park and there is an unobstructed passage to Black Lake at the confluence with the river; then onward for over 20 miles to the dam at Rossie on the Indian River). There are multiple dams the length of the river, they all short portages around them, for canoers that wish to travel the river. Many small towns and villages along the river as well. The upper section of the river, from Cranberry Lake to the origins is located in the back country wilderness of the Adirondak State Park. Wildlife, deer, bear, beaver, native brook trount, and many...
Read moreThis God forsaken river was not forged to be paddled by a fleet of 12 canoes. The river is extremely small and narrow and causes one to question their sanity. Do you like beaver dams? Well after 2 days on the “gatchie” you will despise the existence of all beavers. With a date of a fam every 5 mins, there was no lack of obstacles in this already tiny river. The water looks like diarrhea even after being filtered, and you can definitely taste the beaver as well. I would imagine if you are going for a small day trip in a carbon fiber canoe, it could possibly be enjoyable. BUT If you decide to tackle this seemingly calm enjoyable river with 12, 90lb canoes. You might want to just go to lake...
Read moreA beautiful river in any season. In the summer there are swimming spots in Rensselaer Falls and at Flat Rocks. There is fishing for bullheads and catfish. The village of Heuvelton has a boat launch. It is good for paddle board and kayak. In the winter it freezes, and it conveys a great sense of serenity I have not tried ice-skating. There is a small power dam and the power company is building a fish ladder. This is only about a 3 mile stretch of the river. It begins somewhere in the Aderondacks and empties in the...
