Don't get me wrong. This is a beautiful golf course in pristine condition. I just don't think it's worth $400+ to play, especially in late June (we teed off at 930am and it was 89 and humid). It kind of felt like Disneyworld. As a comparison, you can play Torrey Pines South (also a US Open course) for ~$250 in the summer. This course would be considerably more enjoyable if they allowed golf carts (everyone in my group made the same comment as soon as our round ended, including two who were members of Oakmont CC).
I was not willing to carry my clubs for 18 holes in 90 degree heat coming off a back surgery. So I chose my only other option: getting a caddie (not even pull carts were available). Given that caddies were (essentially) required, I was expecting an experienced looper with intimate knowledge of the course. Unfortunately, I was paired with Jane Doe, who was ~18 years old and told me she had been playing golf for 2-3 years. Jane gave me three putting reads that were blatantly wrong. On one hole, she gave me a left-to-right read. I asked her if she meant right-to-left (because the read seemed wrong), and she said "Ah yes sorry. I always get that mixed up." Jane also lost my Titelist cabrera leather glove and microfiber golf towel that were attached to my bag (worth another $50).
Don't get me wrong, Jane was an incredibly nice person who carried my clubs ~9 miles in the heat of summer. So I gave her a $100 tip and wished her well before heading to college. But she shouldn't be a caddie at a local country club, let alone a US Open course.
I cannot recommend this course to any experienced golfer in good conscience. It's a total rip-off that's trying to monetize the fact that they...
Read moreErin Hill was the first course we played during our July Wisconsin trip on 7/16/2025, the course was well maintained and challenging, definitely recommended to play if you are planning to visit Wisconsin. But the lodge was very small and the AC was very noisy right above the bed, be careful about their loading club process before you leave, there was storm on that day after we finished our rounds and they forgot to load my club, when they finally loaded my clubs to my car I didn’t check my bag since I had my own caddie on that day, the second day when I found that my 9 iron was missing, I called pro shop to report the incident, the person I spoke to was very nice and took my information, (including my address) so I was expecting someone will call me back, but nothing happened. I called a week later 7/25 to the caddie barn and spoke to the supervisor Will, he told me that they never got information from the pro shop, again he took my information and promised that he will look through and call me back even if he can’t find it. But nobody ever called me back. Playing without 9 iron for the following trip was very inconvenient, but how Erin Hill handle the problem need...

It is a L O N G walk around this course. My GPS watch measured nearly o miles. Combined with some hikes up to tees that put my Stairmaster to shame and you’ve got a good workout coming when you tackle Erin Hills.
Second thing you will want to know is …
A caddie is essential. And, given the first point it’s essential that you lighten your bag. No more than a dozen golf balls. No umbrella unless rain is clearly coming. No extra clothes. Only the clubs you’re sure to use. You can play this place with just 10 clubs and still be fine.
If you are coming from out-of-town stay on property. There is nothing better than walking off 18 into the pub and knowing …
‘I can drink what I’d like because I’m not driving’
The rooms are good. Mine was small and yet fine for a single.
Food is great. Forget your diet for the night. Take an extra Lipitor if you need it. Enjoy the treat that is Erin Hills.
And, if you can spare a second day then it’s just a short drive over to Lac La Belle and the B&B’s of Oconomowoc. An excellent short golf trip.
