This became my new favorite climb in the adk. Every Mountain featured stunning views and there are awesome thrills for the adventure junky. The view east from the top of dix is the best i have ever encountered. Its not easy and definitely requires a lot of research before hand otherwise you will end up lost or needing an almost impossible rescue. I am one who is always skeptical when people say something is hard or that something is nerve racking but they were right about this range. Here is a walk through........ Drove 3 hours and arrived at 5am on memorial day weekend. When we arrived we encountered a sign stating the lot was full and that we would have to use the overflow lot 2.2 miles further from the trailhead. We had a small car so i drove up to check it out anyways. Another car was pulling out from the lot due to lack of spaces (16 cars) but a perfect spot for my tiny car was available. My brother and I set out on a perfect day. Starting out from elk lake we hiked in 2 miles and easily found our first turn towards macomb slide. Turning right we began to find it extremely difficult to navigate and for approximately a mile we followed leaves that look as if they were turned up from someone walking over them. At the base of the slide we had no worries but as you begin to ascend thing definitely begin to get a little steep and it makes you pretty uncomfortable. On top of macomb we descended into a valley before heading up south dix and encounter our first Y. taking a right we went up south dix and headed for grace but began to lose track of where we were. Two people informed us we were on the right track to head over to grace, Leaving our packs, we ventured the 1 mountain mile over and 1 mountain mile back. Marked by a stone on the ground on south dix is the proper turn off to go towards hough. So we descended in that direction and it was up, down, up down, up down, maybe a few more times and we finally arrived on beckhorn and then the short jaunt over to dix then back to the beckhorn to descend (It is marked with paint). The descent down the beckhorn trail was a treacherous, never ending climb down. By the time we reached the bottom we would have rather backtracked over hough, macomb and down the terrifying slide. At this point we had 3.8 miles back out and it was not easy but we made it. If we had another 2.2 to the outer lot we would have had a very very difficult time making it over.

Not a hike or backpacking trip to underestimate. If you are very experienced and a fast walker and conditions are perfect it can be done in a day in the longest part of the summer—if you get a good early, early start. Much better done I think as a much more relaxing two-day backpacking trip. This was my favorite multi-day solo trip in the Adirondacks of the many I have done over the last 28 years. May 29 through 31st 1993 (yes 1993). Arrived at the Rte 73 trailhead 1915 hours after departing work in Syracuse at 1515. Made it across the initial ridge to the campsite at Round Pound 2000. Awoke to a beautiful but brisk and windy morning, probably in the mid-30s F. Arrived at Boquet River 1030, then Boquet River lean to at 1130, where the flies were terrible. Began initial ascent at noon. Reached summit at 1630 and stayed for an hour. A man who sounded knowledgeable told me that on an even clearer day you can see all the way across Vermont to New Hampshire. Returned back to the Boquet River lean-to right at dark, 2030 hours, and pitched my tent for the night. A friendly group from Long Island was occupying the shelter. Best night's sleep before or sense while camping, the river roaring nearby, lulled me right into a slumber. Still think of it all these years later.

Bring a ton of water and water filter, especially if doing multiple peaks.

From the Round Pond trailhead, this was one of the most beautiful hikes I have ever been on. We camped close to the bottom of the mountain after the river crossing so we weren’t rushed and our legs were happy to not have another 4 miles out after Dix and Buckhorn. Beautiful views even on a rainy day. With the rain, the trails turned to creeks but it we expected it so it was fine. Not super crowded on a...
