I know you people love hiking but cmon—this is NOT an easy hike. One wrong move and you put yourself out of commission for a week. The rocks are huge and the roots are scattered. You absolutely have to watch where you step, most importantly have the right footwear. I had the right footwear and I still hurt myself. When we were going up we could only wonder how we were gonna get back down. Very steep climb and we barely made it halfway. Going down was just as hard as going up. Be prepared to get on all fours for most of it and to land sharply. Don’t let the beginning of the trail fool you. You’re not just walking, you will have to climb!!
Don’t get me wrong, the trail is very nice! We got to one of the first overlooks and it was very promising. We wanted to stick to it just out of curiosity of what was up there, but we decided we had to go back down because we were afraid of having a hard time getting back from the very top. It felt dangerous. You just need to be prepared for the climb and I don’t think we were that day. In my opinion, this was an intermediate hike for sure. NOT easy. If I didn’t have someone with me I don’t think I would’ve had an easy time. Would I try this one again? Definitely, now that I know...
Read moreBald mountain is a nice two mile up and down hike. There is a steep section that needs to be navigated about at the half way point but if you stick to the right it's the easier of the paths up. After that open flat rocky opening that give was great views of Fourth Lake. After that is up and over rocky spine ridges that are about only a foot in length at the top. If this sounds unsure there is a herd path to the right through the woods that you can use as a bypass (and was quite interesting hearing the exchange of people trying to navigate the rocky spine and then seeing people moving in the woods to their right). Fire tower is nice but can be crowded at times. Little kids (4+) will have no problems and your furry four legged companies. Younger kids might have a harder time and you might end up carrying them more...
Read moreWe had a wonderful hike today! Great for kids ages 10, 14 and 15. Not too strenuous and the views are spectacular. We didn’t have our dog with us because at 3 months she’s not quite ready. And it would’ve been too taxing for our 10 year old lab. The only downside was we saw SEVERAL dogs off leash. If you are bringing your pet who is leash aggressive keep this in mind. My (older) dog is very friendly but rarely he encounters a dog he does not like. If your dog is well behaved enough to be off leash that’s great, but pets get older and grumpy and I need to be able to remove my dog without yours chasing him and making it worse. Be responsible and aware. Also there are a few steep drop offs that I wouldn’t want anyone pets leaping over unawares. An absolute great hike but I bet VERY...
