This is an amazing place, I just love it! However, I'm giving a 4 star rating for some very specific reasons I feel visitors NEED TO KNOW. Smalls Falls is an absolutely beautiful spot to explore and swim BUT you need to visit prepared, with a safety plan in play.
1.) There is NO CELL SERVICE. None. People have died in the waterfalls, this is no joke. If you get hurt or need help, someone has to drive down the road towards town to get signal to call 911.
2.) Tell friends and family where you are going, expected time to get back in contact with them, and what time they should come look for you if they don't hear from you.
3.) Leave a note in your vehicle date/time/ plans you have just in case. I suggest leave it on your driver seat...that way you are not advertising your plans to anyone who walks by, but should someone (Police/Rangers etc) need to search for you, they will find it in your car.
4.) Go with a friend. Don't swim alone! Often there are plenty of people around the falls. Stay within sight of other visitors so other people will notice if you need help/ call for help etc.
5.) The bathrooms are cement "out houses" and always SUPER GROSS DIRTY. I recommend coming already wearing your swim gear.
6.) In light of the filthy out houses You should not be pooping or peeing in the bushes either! This place is busy and will get disgusting fast! My tip for a portable potty that's clean, no smells or ick get a 5gal contractor pail with a lid and put some wood pellets in it (all available at Tractor Supply) The wood pellets are super absorbent, you can dump a coffee can full over top of anything you deposit after using! This will have zero smells or risk of spills to transport back home to throw out/ burn/ or compost. You can also by at walmart (camping section) or order off Amazon, plastic toilet seat with lid that snaps right on the top of a the 5 gal contractor pail. Bring your own TP...
Read moreNew to Maine or don't really know where to go but want to get outside? This is the place!! Our kids (13, 12, 8) absolutely loved this place. It's free, parking is plenty, bathroom on-site, and easy and very short "hike" to the falls. Lots of areas to swim and do some cliff jumping (~6 feet up to around 60 feet for the couragious). The scenery is amazing and this place would be a great place for an afternoon of swimming and having a picnic for a family. Highly recommend you check this place out! Recommend you wear water shoes due to the sharp rocks if you'll be...
Read moreHappy to say that I finally got there! Being an hour away from where I was staying the weather had changed by the time we got there so there weren’t many people, that was a good thing. Despite the humidity and on/off light sprinkles it was very pretty and I hope to go back. I can’t say that it’s a place for little ones with the short hike over tree roots and navigating around the natural landscape. Highly suggest either sneakers or water shoes because the rocks getting in and out of the water can be slippery. It’s very pretty. Really...
