We discovered Simpson's Rest on a recent visit to Trinidad. It's up on a bluff over-looking the town and the views are good. It's also where the Trinidad sign is, the one that is visible from the town and the Interstate. The entrance is gated, but the gate is not usually locked, it just looks like it might be. There is no entrance fee to visit. Be aware of the road going up. Street cars like ours can and do make it, but it is steep, curvy, pitted, and rocky. Not soft dirt and not gravel. Also, not graded. Not long, but we parked in a pull-out on a curve near the summit and walked the rest of the steep trail up. After a rain might not be a good time to attempt this. I would not attempt visiting this place after dark. Once at the top, the view is 360 degrees and the town, the river, and the mountains are clear in all directions. At one point, this was a popular marriage proposal place, but not so much anymore. There used to be some historical information at the top, but for the most part, those things have been removed and the monument tower is crumbling and dangerous. It's fenced for that reason. Graffiti is all over....
