Valdez Stay and Play — Local services in Valdez

We were very late in making a reservation to kayak Glacier Lake when we called Valdez Stay & Play the day prior to when we wanted to kayak. We talked with Jim and asked about getting on a “Wait” or “Cancellation” list. He texted us later in the day to let us know that they opened the schedule for the afternoon the next day and we could reserve kayaks. We had two, single kayaks. Jim & Magdelena (owners) met us at Valdez Glacier View Park with the kayaks. After giving us our life jackets, Magdelena gave us very detailed instructions on kayaking the lake, the precautions we needed to take, and any areas of concern that we needed to avoid. She also let us take a photo of the layout of the icebergs, as well as her cell phone number if we needed to reach her or finished earlier than planned. We were out on the lake for approximately 2.5 hours and it was wonderful as we weaved our way around icebergs; viewed waterfalls, ice caves, and the foot of the Valdez Glacier. Magdelena was waiting for us when we returned to the starting point. This was a fantastic overall experience. First class experience with very nice equipment! Very reasonably priced as well. They brought the electric bikes to us which was very nice because it was a working vacation and we could work up to the last minute and then take off the rest of the day!

I would suggest doing the all day rental for 8 hours. Seeing the area by electric bike gave us more of the 'real' feeling of the area versus by car (which we had access to as well). And most of the area we traveled to suggested by Magdalena had bike paths along the roads so it made it easy, but we also went off on trails which was exciting too!

Definitely go to the fish hatchery, its pretty interesting. I wrote a paper on salmon fish hatcheries in grad school and I still was fascinated by the visit.

In this area the views are always changing due to the many mountains encompassing the harbour so its nice to see several sides of the harbour.

We will be renting again from Valdez Stay and Play on our next visit because we know there is more to see! We will probably rent some of the other equipment they offer as well, we had a great experience with...

I rented an e-bike from Magdalena and had a FABULOUS experience! Her staff oriented me with the bike and ensured i was comfortable in using it, and also provided me with detailed Google map directions to the sites I was interested in seeing. I was given a number to call if there were any issues (flat tire/dead battery/etc) with the promise of a quick rescue.

Halfway through the day, Magdalena met up with me and took me on some back roads up to a gorgeous waterfall, and then to a beach outside of town. I loved having her join me both because I never would’ve found that on my own, but also just to enjoy her company. She is so fun and nice. She even offered to let me keep the bike longer than the 8 hrs I’d rented it so I could see a band playing at a local bar that night.

I highly recommend renting a bike to explore Valdez, it was such a fun way to see the city! I was an e-bike skeptic going it but I loved it so much that now I want my own! I still got a great workout in, as i kept the assist very low for most of the miles, but I sure enjoyed cranking it up to get some...
