EDIT 4, 2023 UPDATE: Management has changed, yet again. New carts are said to be incoming and they have revamped the range. As of today (end of May) its not looking like its going to be a good year. The tee boxes looked great at the end of last year, as did the greens (though they play REALLY SLOW) but the course still struggles with thin, weedy, hard pan fairways. The bunkers are still mostly unplayable. The added sand has washed away. EDIT 3, 2021 UPDATE: Management has changed at Augustine and it seems as though the course is headed in the right direction. The fairways are returning, there is grass on the tee boxes, and there is actually fringe growing around the greens. The greens are still struggling and so many of the bunkers are unplayable (thin, hard sand, linings showing through, horrible draining after rain). The course may want to consider doing away with bunkers completely at this point. Augustine is STILL one of the best layouts I have ever played. It's located 3 miles from 95 and yet surrounded by trees. EDIT 2, 2019 UPDATE: NO marked improvement. The greens are splotchy and diseased while other courses in the area look fantastic. The bunkers have not been maintained. The Bermuda fairways are looking about better though. It's so sad to see the course continue to decline under the current management. Edit: The course management has reached out and appears to be working on correcting the issues. I'm glad to hear it, the course can be fun to play! If you read through the good and bad reviews you will see the trend. Used to be my favorite golf course in the in the area but the poor management and care for the course has created poor golfing conditions. Four years ago the fairways were thick and spongy. Now they are sparse. It's too bad because the layout is excellent.

The Course is an absolute disaster. The greens are destroyed and the course looks as if whoever owns it has given up on maintaining it. I played in a charity event and the course staff didn't even take the bunkers that have been washed out from the rain earlier in the week. It's sad to see a place that apparently gets zero effort to maintain. What a Dog Track. And that's an insult to Dog tracks.

Friend of mine told me to try Augustine Golf Course again bcoz it’s in a very good shape. Yes, it was in a great shape. Fairways and Greens were awesome. Great job by new head pro and his staff. I’m glad I went back. Very friendly Head pro. Whoever had stopped going there due to bad condition of the course I suggest you give another try. I’m sure you won’t be disappointed. Fore!! ⛳️

AUGUST 2023 UPDATE:

This course continues to struggle, but perhaps brighter days are ahead?

The good:

-They've revamped the driving range, and it's doesn't seem to just randomly be closed as much as it used to.

-They have new carts.

-Staff do seem like they care more now than in the past.

-Still one of the best layouts in northern VA.

The Bad:

-The course continues to be in VERY rough shape. Fairways are thin and weedy.

-Most of the bunkers are washed out and unplayable. Some have had water in them for so long that algae and scum have covered the water.

-The rough is still poorly maintained.

-Tee boxes are rough, but seem to be improving somewhat.

-Slow play at times.

Overall, the course is still borderline unplayable. Not worth more than $40 for 18 holes. But perhaps brighter days are ahead. Still a 2-star course.

ORIGINAL REVIEW:

Not what it used to be. First of all, the front 9 was closed for an event. Website didn't say anything about that, and my booking said I would start on the front 9. Also the greens were just aerated - no mention of that. No discount for either of those things, either.

Additionally, there were lots of small debris on the greens, and the fringes in many spots were unplayable. Also, many of the bunkers have eroded all the way down to their liners.

Just unfortunate, and not worth the $50...

Nice people and hear it used to be really nice but it's pretty average at this time. Definitely a course you need to play a few times to know what to do. A lot of blind shots and it was rock hard out there except for the greens were were very soft and slow. The hard fairways made things tough because there is no real rough with is being so hard and thin grass, so if the ball gets through the fairway you are in the trees. Narrow course, need to hit in in the middle. Practice facility was passable, says grass range and it's been a mild spring with no heat yet and it was still off the mats on a Sat, and the grass did not look to be in condition to hit off of, even it were open. It took us 5 hours to play. Something about them letting a foursome out in between tee times, per the marshal, but regardless, very slow. Had a couple of dogs and burgers which were good and the guy in there was nice. $87 for the round I feel is a bit high, if it included range balls then I'd say it in the realm. Weekdays are $68 so I'd say do...
