Black Lake Golf Club — Local services in Waverly Township

Our group of 28 went to black lake golf facilities for the weekend for our annual 36 hole tournament and conference. This is the 17th year in a row that our group has traveled to a northern Michigan golf destination and this weekend was a first for us. On the back nine of our Saturday round our lead group had just teed off on 18, the last foursome was about to tee off on 12 when it started raining, it did rain hard for about 20 minutes then tapered to a steady rain that lasted about 1 hour. This is at 2:00 pm. So we go to the clubhouse, get a burger, watch some football and wait to go back out. At 3:00, the starter comes in and says "we've decided to close the course for the day." Now, in all fairness, the course WAS unplayable at 3:00 pm, however there was 5+ hours until dark and all we wanted to do was finish our round, which could have been accomplished in 1 1/2 hour at most. They gave us all 9 hole rain checks and then THEY WENT HOME!!! In the meantime, I have the other 27 players coming to me asking about going back out because by 4:00 the sun was back out and we looked at one of the greens/fairways and it was drained nicely(this is a Reese Jones designed course, it drains well). The rain checks did us no good because 18 of our 28 players did not have the time to play an extra 9 holes on Sunday after our regularly scheduled round. So I went to one of the facility managers to plead with them, saying we are happy to go cart path only and wait until 6:00 pm if they would like so that we could finish. The woman at the course said, no the GM already decided, the course is closed. I spoke to the GM during this process, he never left the clubhouse to go look at the course. The ONLY reason our group decided on 2 stars is because of Angie, who helped us with rooming. Angie was fantastic and was herself visibly upset at how we were treated. The course is very nice, but the golf course management leaves MUCH to be desired. Course pro Mike was condescending and difficult for many of our players as well. We will NOT be back...

This course was INCREDIBLE! Great condition and great course layout…the course is nothing short of amazing. With that being said the entire staff and environment is awful. We golfed the day before a tournament and were asked multiple times if we were playing in it (because we were the youngest people on the course at 20 and 21) when we answered no we were just playing casually we were treated quite condescending in conversation. The group in front of us assumed we were awful at golf and were disappointing to converse with due to the fact they were clearly scratch golfers. Me and my friends are not, but we are certainly better than the average golfer and the way we were treated for our age was very surreal and disappointing. There were some exceptions within the staff, but for the most part the staff was rude and came off snobby…the only people that were enjoyable to speak to and respectful were the group behind us (who we talked to quite a bit as we were held up by groups that we were catching the pace-of-play blame for). Still worth playing this gorgeous...

Called and made a tee time on June 26th for 4 at 8:30 today 07/05. Drove an hour to the course and they say that they did not have my name on the book. Told them that I called a week ago and who I talked to and all they said was sorry, they didn’t write it down. They said they could not accommodate us and that they could try to find a different golf course for us to go to. Got there at 730, an hour early and they had two cancel but still could not go out because the starter said no. Zero accountability and zero customer service. If you call and they mess up then the customer suffers and all they have to do is say sorry. All of us were UAW members and they turned down $200.00 in golf because of their mistake. I guess you have to call twice to confirm that they did their job. Today was $50, would not waste my money spending more then they can’t handle business now and won’t waste my time again. Was very excited to golf there but their customer service and work ethic...
