NALTC is the best value for a lineman school. Before attending NALTC I looked into several other schools, but NALTC was the cheapest school while also offering all the certifications, including an in-house CDL program, that are required for almost all jobs as a lineman. I kept hearing from visiting companies and graduate students how they had a leg up on new apprentices from other schools because of the scope of hands-on training at NALTC. The instructors are all outstanding in how much they truly care about the students succeeding and understanding the material. I especially would like to thank Tim Rhodes for his effort and expertise; I learned the most from him by far. I would also like to thank Bobby Meschede for his constant encouragement and caring; that may not seem very important, but it makes all the difference to have someone who believes in you and roots for you to succeed. Andy McComas, the owner of the school, was also extremely helpful. He is not a lineman, but he’s a very shrewd businessman, and he taught the finance and interview classes. What I learned in the interview classes and the feedback I got definitely helped me land the job I am in now, which I will go into later. Andy is also on top of disciplining students. Some people thought this was unfair, but as a student who never got in trouble and just wanted to learn as much as I could, I appreciated not having to worry about other students causing problems. If you apply yourself and pay attention, you should have no problem getting a job somewhere out of school. Housing was also very convenient in the proximity to the school. I was lucky enough to be in a house with a couple roommates, but I have heard of knuckleheads getting in trouble at the apartments. If you follow the rules and be respectful to everyone, you won’t have a problem though. I have a bit of advice for incoming students. Get your CDL learner’s permit before coming to school. I did, and had no problem. Some states are weird about transferring CDL tests, so you probably want to call your local DMV and find out how that works if you’re coming from out of state. Pay attention in class. I heard it over and over again from visiting graduate students that they wished they had paid more attention in school and not messed around so much. You can always learn more from the instructors, so take advantage of that and pick their brains whenever you can. Also get as much as you can out of the interview class. Lots of people thought it was boring, but I got a lot out of it and I know it made the difference in getting offers from all three companies I had interviews with. Don’t underestimate Tennessee weather. If you’re in the winter semester, pack lots of winter clothes, good gloves, bib overalls, and a rain jacket. Start applying for jobs as soon as you can. Some job postings are only open for a few days, so check every day so you don’t miss an opportunity. Most hiring processes take a few weeks, so it’ll help minimize the time between graduating and working. Pay attention to fiber. I learned all I could from JJ on fiber lashing since fiber jobs are easier to get into than lineman jobs and act as a stepping stone towards linework. Pay attention to safety. Most companies emphasize safety and will grill you on your safety perspective and habits during an interview, so start good habits now. I graduated in April, and will be starting work in June. I was the last person interviewed at a big utility, and the interviewers thought they already had their three picks. But according to the HR guy, I blew them away with the interview and took the top spot. Over a hundred people applied, eighty-eight passed the physical test, and thirty-three were invited for an interview. I knew I had what it takes to get the job, but applying what I learned at NALTC was what brought it out during the interview and ultimately...

Going to the North American Lineman Training Center is by far one of the best decisions I have ever made. The owner is an incredible man and his team is perfect. The ladies who run the phones in the office are very helpful. The instructors at this school are life-long lineman. Each one of them is from a different background in the field. Between the four of them, you have a dream team. They can answer any question and they break down the basics of every field of line work for you (transmission, distribution and underground).

The book work is very interesting and extremely educational. I believe it is one of the factors that helps to set this school above the others. You are not just learning how to climb here, you are learning the art of your trade as a lineman.

The outdoors section of the course is incredible. Each student gets one-on-one instruction on over 30 different stations. You will get a chance to work almost every kind of job that a real lineman would encounter. They will also get you certified in every way that you would need to be to work as a lineman. Your class A CDL, OSHA 11.5 card, climbing, CPR/first aid, bucket truck operation and a lot more.

You will be assigned to a small team of other students as the semester moves on and you will learn how to operate like an actual lineman crew. The climbing gear and tools that you will recieve and get to keep from this school are top of the line.

Safety is extremely important to everyone at NALTC. They constantly monitor the students and have placed every kind of safety measure in place. You can feel safe with these guys. They are going to teach you the "self-defense" of a line worker. You will know what to watch out for in real life. How to keep yourself and your crew safe.

Andy also teaches an incredible section on how to be successful with the money you will earn in this industry. And perhaps my favorite part of this school is the grit and character that it builds. If you give it your all, you WILL leave this place a stronger person than you came. You will have a sense of satisfaction from your work that I personally could not find in other industries.

This school was a real blessing for me and I will cherish the time I spent here for the rest of my life. I would consider the people who run NALTC to be friends and mentors to me. These people are the real deal and they don't quit watching out for you even when you graduate. These guys want to see you succeed in a life long career...
