This has always been one of my favorite geysers in the park. It erupts regularly and fairly often - about every 3 hours. It begins with a few minor eruptions and then enters a fairly long major phase. When water is no longer being sent up, the geyser enters a nice load and powerful sounding steam phase. I have never been there when more than 20 or so people have been present, so it almost feels like a private showing. The 2.5 mile or so nearly flat walk in is along the beautiful Upper Firehole River. So even if you don't make it all the way in to the geyser itself, the shortened walk is worthwhile. If the small parking lot is filled, it is easy to snag a spot in the Kepler...

Talk to people at the trailhead and along the trail to get an idea of whem it last erupted (3 hr intervals since the 1890s), and bring a lunch and hang out in the geyser basin till the major eruption. Dont miss the real show! Lone star Will erupt almost at full height about 20-30 minites before the full eruption, which lasts much longer and ends with a great steam phase. Dont miss the other thermal features around and bring a lunch or beer to pass the time (if you're timing isnt great). Biking is a great,...

Way more impressive than old faithful if you're lucky enough to see it erupt. 5 mile round trip hike, which is really senic (Forrest and mostly following the river) and flat (easy hike). There is a secluded parking lot and bathroom at the trail head. Even if you don't see it erupt, the shape of the geyser is huge and pretty to see. I think I heard a ranger say it erupts round about every three hours, and it erupted for at least 10-15 minutes. At least. Would recommend. Old faithful...
