The dinner ride is a can't miss event at Yellowstone!
Had an incredible dinner ride out to a cook camp. We saw bison, two beautiful coyotes, a badger and a bunch of adorable ground squirrels. The food was delicious and plentiful and it was such a pleasure to enjoy it under the wide open sky with my family.
The four stars is because there was some confusion when we checked in - we made our reservations six months in advance through the Xanterra website so there wouldn't be issues - but the ladies at check in couldn't find our reservations for twenty minutes, telling us the ride was full and our names weren't on a written list - until they DID find us- it was on the computer the whole time!- which meant there was no longer time for us to use the bathroom before we left, they held up the whole group of horses and other guests- so people were looking at us like we caused their delay, and we were ran through the safety talks to get the group going. It made what would have been a perfect experience start off in an incredibly stressful manner.
That said...once we were on horses, the rest of the evening was wonderful. The horses were smart and gentle and the trail guides who took us to the cook camp - a group of talented and charming cowgirls from all over the country!- made sure everyone was safe, happy, educated and entertained as they told stories of the history of the area, explained local wildlife and pointed out interesting sights. These ladies were awesome.
The coyotes who came out from some brush and accompanied us along our journey were SO COOL.
The ride out lasted about an hour. When we arrived, there was tea and water and lemonade for everyone as they finished preparations for dinner and we awaited the arrival of the other guests on stagecoaches.
They rang the dinner bell and everyone lined up and we were given a generous portion of steak cooked as you like it and tasty sides, and even a dessert. There were Coke products in cans for dinner too.
They had games for the kiddos, like pretend cow roping, and a man played live guitar music as we all ate our delicious meal in a beautiful Yellowstone mountain valley during the golden hour. It was pretty perfect.
There are porta-potty bathrooms that are pretty gross lol. But it's better to have a bathroom of some kind then to just have to go find a tree!
We spent an hour and a half at the cook camp, then rode back to the corrals in the hazy twilight, with full tummies, marveling at the beauty around us.
Seriously, book this activity early because it will fill up, it's definitely one...
Read moreHANDS DOWN my FAVORITE thing to do at Yellowstone and Iâve been here once before. Relaxing ride through the valley and saw a coyote! Live music during cookout! Steve you got a great voice. The food! Steak was delicious and cooked to your liking. Didnât even need sauce. Came with all the fixings (watermelon, cole slaw, potato salad, baked beans, corn muffin and apple crisp). You can get seconds if you wish but I was stuffed and I love food. There was lemonade, iced tea, water, sodas and cowboy coffee! Talked to some west coast people while sharing a table. Super neat hearing about their lives and learning we are more alike than different. On the ride back we listened to the many tales of Yellowstone characters starting with Native Americans up to present day. Shout out to our storyteller Becky! You are so outgoing asking people to dance. You are so lovable with your dad jokes and brilliant smile. You are magic. Donât ever change. BOOK IT, ITS A...
Read moreInformed us upon check-in that our 2-hour ride was changed to a 1-hour ride due to muddy trails.
Nobody can control the weather, but why couldn't the wranglers/tour company reroute and/or send us out twice to still honor the 2-hour ride?
They require all minors to wear helmets (and recommended everyone wear them). A bit overly cautions, but ok.
You may not being any water, phones or cameras of any kind. This includes prohibiting action cameras. This is a RIDICULOUS policy imho. The purpose of GoPros and 360 cams are to allow you to be hands-free. They would not even allow flush-mount cams.
There were no branches, rocks, or anything fort us to even get caught up on. We've ridden with lots of other companies in other locations (much more dangerous trails) with no such policy.
This really put a damper on our vacation and nearly ruined an otherwise fantastic mooring and...
