Greenbank Pantry & Deli is the sort of place you wish you’d discovered sooner, quietly set along Highway 525, miles from either the ferry or the bridge to Fidalgo Island. On Whidbey, distances feel longer, and good sandwiches scarcer. But here, nestled near Greenbank Farm, Ebey’s Prairie, and Penn Cove, is a deli that consistently over-delivers without ever seeming to try too hard.

I’ve been stopping here regularly since around 2018, and each visit feels like turning a page in a story you’re eager to continue. Sometimes, I call ahead—orders take 10-20 minutes to complete. A human always answers the call, and then you simply show up and pay in person at the store. That’s nice.

The sandwiches—served on perfectly toasted semolina rolls and the like—are substantial without being fussy. Favorites like the Jersey or the Hot Milano come layered with Italian deli meats, bright pickled peppers, and vegetables so flavorful and fresh they momentarily transport you to deli counters you once loved in other cities and other lives. Prices are refreshingly modest at around $10 to $13—astonishingly fair for sandwiches of this quality.

The shelves hold treasures too: uncanny colas, craft beers from small towns on your bucket list, gourmet sandwich accoutrements, slick olive oils, and candies both nostalgic and new, including locally made caramels the size of your thumb. Staff work quickly, efficiently, and carefully. You sense immediately that someone who knows food very well has orchestrated every detail here. What they wanted was to create a distinctively small farm-town energy with strong Island County accents.

It works. It’s a small place, understated yet thoughtfully complete. It never oversells...

Can't say I've ever had a better roadside sandwich. To call this sandwich gourmet ( itialian xtra meat) would not be an exaggeration. At first I thought it was a little pricey, but then I realized I was eating ART. Worth every penny. Will definitely be back. Very friendly staff, good beverage selection, cute environment. Bravo greenbacks deli delicious. Wow 2nd visit.even better then first (the Ruban) I don't know who gave these folks their golden tounge, but they blend flavors perfectly. Best sandwich in ages both times. Go here, you'll be happy and glad you did. 3rd visit. Also delicious and generous portion (RBB). Leaving the island soon, hoping I can squeeze in another sandwich before heading home to Bellingham. If I had to rate them #1 itialian #2 Ruban #3 roast beef and blue. Bread excellent each and every time, although the rye was amazing on its own. 4th visit equally as good as all the rest. Had to return for another itialian, because I dint know when I will ever have a sandwich...

Great little deli and market. The market carries ingredients that can be hard to source in a rural area, imported pasta, chocolates, and pantry staples, including many items that are locally made. They carry bread from the island's best bakeries, and have gorgeous seasonal bouquets. There are a few picnic tables outside if you want to eat your sandwich there. And bonus! 😀If you're taking a sandwich to go, like the excellent Reuben I get every month or 2, they'll assemble it for you to heat up at home, which is super-convenient if you don't live close by. (And it's in Greenbank! Hardly anyone does live close. 😅)I'd give them another star if they offered a wider variety of sandwiches, including a thoughtful, vegan option or 2, and if they sourced as much produce locally as possible. But the staff is lovely, the food is great, it's one of the handful of restaurants on Whidbey that's solidly excellent& actually worth what it costs to...

I love, love, LOVE The Greenbank Pantry & Deli. My boyfriend introduced me to it a while ago, but today I thought to stop by for a couple sandwiches with my daughter. My daughter wants to eat healthier so on our way home from Coupeville I thought we'd stop by for some dinner. We both got the Classic. Mine with roast beef and havarti, Sophia’s with ham and cheddar. We both got the Rose Lemonade. She ate all of her sandwich and because of the wonderful size saved mine for home. The bread is baked that day and the ingredients are fresh and tasty. For a small store they have amazing options of things to buy at a very reasonable price. I know it's going to be our weekly dinner spot after appointments in Coupeville.

What a cool place. Kind of in the middle of nowhere in-between Coupeville and Freeland... Neat little store that just happens to make some really freaking good sandwiches! The menu has something for everyone. The ingredients are top notch! The bread is fantastic and it's cheap! Only like 10-12$ for a delicious sandwich that you could not make at home... Sorry ... It's too good. Highly recommended. And in case you're driving by and you're not hungry... Run into the weed store next door and get yourself the munchies! PS... The store also has some great gourmet and Asian ingredients that you won't get at any of the other stores on the south end of Whidbey.
