Porters Sporting Goods — Local services in Whitehouse

Let me tell about my first experience with Porters. I had been looking locally where I live (Bryan,TX) for a Thermion XG50 thermal scope with no luck. Decided to call Porters and give them a shot. Called them on Tuesday and the gentleman who answered the phone said they just received two in stock that day but didn’t know what the price was yet. He took my info and said he would call back in day or two. On Friday I decided to call since I haven’t heard back yet and was told they were waiting on invoice to know what to sell it for. I asked the man to confirm if it was the XG50 and he said yes it was. Called back again On Tuesday, John answered the phone and told me the scope was going to be $5,199.00. I asked him if he was sure it was the XG50, he said yes. Told him I was on my way that it would be about 2 1/2 hours. When I arrived and waited my turn John asked if I needed help. Told him my name and what I was there for. He walked over to counter and pulled out a Pulsar Thermion scope box that clearly had XQ50 written on end of box. I informed him that wasn’t the model I drove there for and his reply was “What’s the difference?” Then told me “no problem, someone else will buy it” and walked away from me. The XQ50 sells for $3,800 at most other stores for those that don’t know and they had it marked $5,200. Also noticed that almost all guns were $200-300 higher than most anywhere else I’ve seen them. In my opinion, nothing more than an overpriced pawn shop that happens to have a firearms license and completely disrespectful. Man never attempted to apologize for me driving 2 1/2hrs to give them almost $6000 because they either don’t know their products or...

Love this place! They have a huge selection of guns, which is what I was looking for! A tactical shotgun in particular! I had went to Superior Outfitters in Tyler but never got waited on! Probably won't be going back because that's the 2nd bad experience for me there! Needless to say that when I walked into Porters, I was greeted and our salesman was patient and showed me every style shotgun they had! Beamer was very knowledgeable and was eager to help! I walked away choosing the Silver Eagle TAC PRO 12 Guage!! It doesn't always pay to go to the big companies! I'm an older consumer and being personable goes a long way! I will be buying all my future guns and sporting goods from Porters! Go check them out, their prices are very competitive! VERY HAPPY I stopped by!
