The East Portal itself is a very large parking area where the train enters the long Moffat Tunnel. Not very exciting. My five stars are for the trail from there to Rogers Pass Lake and on to the Pass (can't add that spot on the map itself). Fairly long hike to some awesome views, alpine lakes and intersection at the top end with the Continental Divide Trail.

This is was a great place to hike. We hiked to Crater Lake and it was magical! The water was clear and we did see some people fishing. I feel the trail was not hard but at moderate level. There is some old homesteads on the way to the lake. Also, I did not camp on this trail but this would be a great camping spot!

This is a really fun place to go to beautiful sites. Wonderful hiking trails a little bit of history and if you get there just at the right time you can see a train coming out of the tunnel. It’s pretty amazing.

Just wow! The things humanity can build give a budget and some time is simply mind blowing. This tunnel is an example. It’s a mile long supposedly and it comes out right at the base of Winter Park. Crazy to think we’re just a mile away from WP. The dates at the front of the tunnel indicate it took 4 years to build. The parking at the tunnel is ample. We were here in September when the leaves are turning and there were a hundred plus cars in the parking lot but we still had plenty of room to park. The tunnel has loud fans that blow after the train goes through to clear the exhaust from the train but they stop blowing after a little while. And if you just get started with your hike you’ll quickly get away from the noise as well. Great spot...

I am sure I’ve written about this area before, but just in case here it is. This is a great area that has some great history, and for a bonus this area is always open year round due to they have to keep the roads open because of the tunnels. Okay now about this area as far as hiking, camping, cross country skiing and snowshoeing it’s great. Again it’s back in aways, but...

This is a trailhead for the James Creek Wilderness Area, which has several trails into true wilderness. It can get crowded at times. There are restrooms and a huge parking lot. I saw a cow and calf moose on my way back. They were blocking my path. I stayed calm and talked to the moose. They can be very dangerous. I made some noises. They eventually wandered off away...
