Totally embarrassed that I invited my family to join me here today. I live nearby and previously had a fairly good experience, visiting alone with my well behaved, calm and leashed dog for a tasting. I own a busy and highly reviewed Airbnb nearby with a robust guidebook that I have personally taken a lot of time to curate - so I wanted to see if this was a place I should add. They seem to be dog friendly (on leash of course), but as I was leaving, the owner urged me to come back next time “without the dog”. I brushed it off, assuming she meant well, just wishing I could have joined the crowd inside.
But today, I brought my sister, BIL and 18 month old niece and the cranky old lady was SO rude and over-bearing, treating my family as if they’re bad parents for allowing the child to walk independently around. It’s not as if we were there to get wasted and be irresponsible. But she made all of us feel that way. So inhospitable. My sister ordered me a single glass of rose, and the old woman brought it out… standing 5’ from the tasting room door, just looking at me. Didn’t even say anything… and I was heading out to the field with both my niece and dog. So I asked my niece to wait and the woman immediately snapped at me — “DON’T LEAVE HER!” Like, oh my god!! I am walking literally 20’ to you! Calm down!! I know my niece, she is 100% fine. “She could run off in a second!!”. Completely irrational. If you aren’t kid-friendly, explicitly state so!! It’s not as if my niece was loud, whining or causing a scene. In fact, she picked up and fixed their cheese sign three times as it blew over in the wind! We were prepared to have a glass of wine and move to the hillside but she was just so nasty, we left.
Some old school, over-bearing attitudes. If I wanted to hang out with my cranky mom, I’d go...
Read moreI and my sister and brother-in-law have visited Walker Road on numerous occasions, at least a dozen times. Our group always purchases at least 3 bottles of wine and have enjoyed the views overlooking the vineyard and distant hills. In a somewhat shocking and off putting incident today, upon our arrival, the owner’s wife informed us that in an hour a guitar player would be starting and we might be asked to leave if the place gets too crowded! We are a group of mature, non-rowdy folks in our 60’s and 70’s. We are the sort of clientele you would think would be welcome with open arms. As is our custom, we set up ‘camp’ on the lower deck and enjoyed the appetizers and, over the course of 3 hours, 3 bottles of wine. One of our party, as we readied to leave, asked the owner’s wife why would we be asked to leave, reminding her that we have been good customers. Her retort was, ‘we have lots of good customers.’ We were all highly disappointed by this inhospitable treatment. Maybe she was just having a bad day. If that’s the case she...
Read moreWalker Road Vineyards is what a quintessential New England farm winery should be. It is a small venture run by a very friendly and informative husband and wife who have been sharing their perfected wines with Connecticut for almost two decades. The winemaker and his wife converted an antique barn into a cozy tasting room, complete with a fireplace. If visiting during the warmer months, there is a deck that has been added to the rear of the barn that offers wine drinkers a view of the many acres of vines that the family has grown and nurtured as well as other outdoor seating options overlooking the vineyard. This is one of the best truly family farm wineries in the state. I highly...
