Drove over this pass May 12 last year and the whole mnts were covered with snow but we said, “we NEED to come back here!” And so we did on July 10. The mountain had shed its snow, we shed our coats, and we even had a new ride by then too! Gorgeous views. Lots of wildlife. Excellent boondock camping in these mountains. Road is in good condition even with snow but the pass can close. Be prepared. Worth the drive!

Getting here had gorgeous views along the way. It isn't the easiest trip though due to the all the curves and inclines and declines. I believe the most we declined was an 8% grade. Beautiful area

Powder River Pass is very scenic and the roadway is quite safe. But watch for icing near the pass. I love the primitive but tidy USFS campgrounds along the way. Also watch for cattle grazing on the highway, especially at night, since much of it is open-range country. The campgrounds are fenced from cattle. This is a spectacular route for over 100 miles distance across the Bighorns. Gotta love...
