Commissary — Local services in Yigo Municipality

Pros: decent prices. Cons: shady management and bait and switches.

The commissary has on average competitive or better prices on many things compared to the local economy. The problem comes to questionable management. Off base is more expensive, but items are likely fresher.

Always check your receipt before you leave the commissary.

I've been bait and switched with sales where they intentionally mix virtually identical items where one is half off the other full price. I've been overcharged for many items based on labelled price versus what they ring up at the register. Most of the time, these are 10-20¢ differences, but adds up for the commissary. The earlier bait and switch issue would have cost me $40 if I hadn't caught it. I was told they were fixing it, but the next day it still hadn't changed the set up.

For situational awareness when calling the commissary do not solely rely on a commissary worker checking if they have certain items in stock. Ensure you check yourself due to the fact i wasted a whole day looking for a certain item they had in stock.

They claim certain items are on sale. Look at the original price behind the sale price. They are normally the same price and will just make it seem like it’s on sale to get you to buy it!

The produce goes bad in 2 days. Most produce contains mold.

Also, a lot of items are expired. Make sure you check the expiation date on items before buying.

The commissary on base is pretty good for most of the essentials. The only reason it is not 5 stars is due to the lack of selection/regularity of the fresh produce and the limited supply of organic foods. They have drastically improved the selection and number of organic produce and frozen food selections. The manager will special order stuff for you if you ask, and if it turns out to be a popular item there is a chance that it will become a regularly stocked item.
